Idiots guide to VPN and DIR-655 needed...
« on: June 05, 2008, 04:14:08 AM »

I searched the forums, and didn't find this problem.  Here's the setup:  Vista Ultimate PC, Toshiba Satellite laptop(Vista).  Router DIR-655 A2 firmware 1.05.  The current home network, WPA2, works flawlessly with the router and laptop.  I will be going on a trip soon, and would like to use the laptop, from a internet connection at the location, to be able to log into my home network (PC machine) for mostly file transfers (pics, vids, etc).  Just be able to surf the PC as I can in the network at home.  I know that Vista has a vpn setup config I will need to go through.
Do I need to do that on the PC and/or the laptop?  If so, will the vpn setup co-exist with my normal netwrk when I am back home again?  And, the biggie question, for me:  What do I need to do to get the DIR655 configured to do this?  Sorry, but I am new to the remote networking thing.  Any very helpful how-to links would be great, I have found a couple for the vista setup so far.  I am hearing that the 655 doesn't like doing the VPN thing, though.  I downloaded the 1.11 firmware in case I need it.  I see no VPN options in the 1.05 formware.  I can surf around and change the settings in the router fairly competently.
Thanks in advance!

RDP ( remote deskptop connection) and FTP (file transfer protocol).
The RDP will allow you to remotely control your PC and FTP will allow you download your media files from your remote location.

Need to setup for No-IP and Dyndns to mask your IP into  lets' say http://bobnet.homeip.net:8080 and have Ultra VNC installed on your PC so you could login and remote control any PC you have on your network. Or just use http://bobnet.homeip.net:8080\login.asp logiin to your web server. ftp server mail server music server or media server. Whatever you want.

This will show you what I mean for the router to be setup:
http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655/Dynamic_DNS.html

Then you need to head over to either

No-IP Free Dynamic DNS
http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html

or

DynDNS Free
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/

Just add your current IP address from your ISP for you and then use the router to update the info back to one of these services. It's really easy to do. The only problem is that these services require you to use url address you're using to access your site. Otherwise they'll drop you if their is no activity. They'll email you to tell you that before they do it.
