Not saying your wrong, but could you quote your source? Most external antenna are Omnidirectional so form a spherical donut shape with a void directly above and directly below. Most in internal antenna are PCB types so vary depending on the antenna design. My main reason I don't like internal is any antenna inside the router will work better outside the router. Also, with external you can repair/upgrade them to high gain. I think the main reason manufactures are switching to internal is because PCB is alot cheaper then those with external and PCB allows for beam forming tech. Beam forming, if implemented wrong, can cause all kinda of problems though. Just ask the DIR-657.
