DIR-655 Wont Save any Changes
« on: April 07, 2012, 09:04:16 PM »

Router novice here, but have been running this router for a few years without problem.  I set it up and updated firmware a few years ago.

Info:
Router:  DIR-655  H/W: A3  Firmware: 1.21   Browser Firefox 11.0 and IE 8

ISP:  Comcast via Cable Modem: RCA DHG536C  (installed to replace aged modem in the last 30 days)

Problem:
Disabled the wireless radio on my DIR - 655 before leaving on vacation as in the past.

When attempting to activate wireless from SETUP/WIRELESS/MANUAL, then hitting SAVE SETTINGS  the browser page tries to update, then I get a system tray note "Local Area Connection, A network cable is unplugged".

I then notice the router light cycle as if its resetting and all Ethernet link lights blink, I then get a white page stating: " Please wait...
The gateway is currently measuring your network connection.
Accessing this web page might have an effect on the measurement.
This page will refresh shortly.  "

then I'm taken back to the login page with none of the changes saved.

I noticed the time/date was wrong (02/01/2012) while poking around and tried to fix that by using PCs time option, but that didn't save either.

Any other option I've tried to save, will not save.

I have powered down the router and cable model. then switched back on.

Ideas from forum that I'm not certain of:

Restore factory defaults then reload saved config

Update firmware to 1.34

I'm being cautious before taking the next step, since my wired connection to the router still works fine.

Thanks in advance for your input

With IE8, put it in Compatibilty mode and try to make your changes.

Tried this, but no luck

Try changing the WAN port speed from Automatic to manual 100 or 1000 if your ISP modem support GB speeds.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Try Opera browser, does it do the same thing?

Thanks for the input, FN.  Unfortunately, these suggestions didn't work.

I changed the WAN port speed, but can't save these or ANY changes

I changed the Cables between the modem and router AND the PC and Router.  No luck

I switched the LAN port for the PC to Router connection.  No luck.

What ever is causing the problem causes the router to quickly power cycle or reset which drops the ethernet link to my PC.

I'm think about resetting to factory defaults and then applying FW 1.2.1 again, but I fear I won't be able to save any changes once I get to the defaults.

Any thoughts?

I would either do the following. Reload code and manually set up the router from scratch with out using the saved configuration file.
or

Update to v1.35NA with out loading any saved configuration file.

Review and follow the FW update sticky in this forum for the process.

FN,  Thx for the prompt response.

Couple of questions....  Is the starting point for either suggestion to restore to factory defaults?

By reload code do you mean....reload 1.21 over 1.21

I have a few versions of the saved config that I know are clean.  I used one about 60 days ago to fix a problem.  I only mention this as I don't look forward to reconfiging from scratch.  I might overlook something.

Thanks again for your input.

Cheers,  David

Take screen captures of options you need as I recommend in your case to update and not use any configuration files until this issue is cleared up. Review the FW update sticky for the process please.

Thanks again for your input.

Problem appears solved.  Here's what I did.

Factory reset.

Reload FW 1.21

Load Last known config file.  (tried the lazy way first, was prepared to start from reset if failed)

All is good.  Did change time to load from time server then saved.  No problem.

Don't plan on upgrading from V 1.21  unless you recommend FN.

Thanks FN for all the help.

Cheers,

David

Keep whats working for your currently. Get it all configured and then save off. Name the saved config file so you know what it came from. I use the following: date/model/Rev/FWversion so it might look like this:
20120409DIR655RevA3v121config.extention.

So after the issues I had with the 645 I returned it and picked up the DIR-655 instead. I'm on Firmware 2.03 hardware revision B1 and I'm having the same problem. I can run the wizards to get it working, and to get the wireless security setup, but if I try to change anything individually in the manual setup, it prompts me to wait 20 seconds, but when I check the changes aren't saved.

So, I'm trying to update to 802.11n only, or to WPA2 only and it doesn't save the changes. I've tried multiple firmware version (2.01, 2.03, and 2.07) but none resolve the issue and 2.07 has the SharePort bug so I've settled on 2.03 for now. Any suggestions?

Theres got to be something on ur PC and browser that your using that isn't working right. I have a Rev B1 with v2.03 loaded and don't see this issue. I use Windows 7 x64 with IE 9 and Opera and a Mac Book Pro with Safari and Opera and don't see any issues like this. I'm waiting on my 645 too arrive this next week. Since you seem to see this on a different router, I would take this router to a different location with different PCs, maybe friend, neighbor or family and just connect it to one of there PCs, don't have to connect it to there internet and use there PC to see if it exhibits the same thing.

Thanks, that was an easy one! I used IE9 instead of Firefox and it worked right away. I should have thought of that to begin with, but thanks!
