Media Server (NAS DNS-323 & DSM-510)
« on: January 14, 2008, 07:46:23 AM »

I have spoken with Dlink's product specialists regarding a possible issue with the 323's media server or the media player 510. When trying to view photos/music/video by using the remote or screen selection when using the 323's media server I am shown an empty list of items. THE ONLY way I can view ANY file is by selecting server and scrolling through the folders to select it. I have originally had the DSM-320, Xchanged that for the DSM-510 and had that replaced already. I have effectively had 3 media players and all of them suffer from this same issue (the are other...but lets not get into that). Of course, I have been advised that Dlink wasn't aware of this issue. Interesting .... Never the less I have 3 times. My set up is DSM-510 to DIR-655 to DNS-323. Something as obvious as this couldn't have been missed in the development stages. After pointing this out to the tech rep I was advised that the DNS-323 is developed and supported by the Business division and the DSM-510 is developed and supported by the Consumer Division. Each department is in somewhat a disconnect with eachother and I have been further advised that this being such a complicated issue could take a very long time to resolve. Aside from this the products that are required to put the test system together will be difficult to obtain...HOLD UP! Difficult? All the products are Dlink! LOL

Don't get me wrong the gentleman that helped me was kind enough to offer his services and promised to try to sort this out. I had a tremendous help from our moderator *applause*. It took me a month to receive a phone call from Dlink's support and that was only after our god the MOD commanded it.  ;D

Now, as part of the solution if anyone is experiencing the same issue or has anything to contribute in terms of this issue please post it here. I don't think that I am alone on this and it will help to have confirmed accounts so that a firmware upgrade will be developed. Since it has yet to be decided which product is the culprit I believe that it is the DNS-323 media server. As a test I will will install the media server on my computer to determine this.

Cheers,

Gian-Piero

Lucid,

There is definitely some 'miscommunication' here. First off the DSM-510 and DNS-323 are all part of the D-Link Multimedia product category and are handled by the same management so I apologize for the wrong information you have received. Second, I know exactly what you are experiencing and the cause of it. The reason the DSM-510 and DNS-323 did not work hand-in hand out of the box is because the DSM-510 was released after the DNS-323 was well into production and the DSM-510 utilizes a special upnp av command called CDS:Search. What this means is that when the DSM-510 comes on the network looking for servers it initiates the CDS:Search command to available UPNP AV servers and populates the music/photo/video section.

The DNS-323 firmware 1.03 which has been available since before the DSM-510 launch as well as currently does not incorporate the CDS:Search command into the built in UPNP AV server. Once this is added to the DNS-323 UPNP AV server your media will properly display on the DSM-510. I apologize for the inconvenience and we hope to resolve this as soon as possible.

Thanks, this information was very helpful. If anyone at Dlink is interested they can look up my claim and advise the reps with whom I have been dealing an informative session on the workings of their products. Like I said the rep was in disbelief over this issue. He went on to say I was the only one who had this issue...etc...Though you say the divisions are handled by the same management team when calling in to the tech support numbers their are 2 distinct numbers for two differrent categories. One being business and the other being consumer. I had tried to discuss the issues with the DSM-510 with the consumer number and they would not assist at all. Period. No matter how hard I tried it was utterly useless. They (being all the reps I have spoken to in 1 month) had more than reiterated that support is only handled by the business division. The business division was always unavailable and I was always advised that a support ticket was being made for a call back. Non of which actually happened until one of the Moderators from here intervened. I am not challenging your words, I am saying everyone the consumer calls is being direct to different departments based on product support.

I am glad that a firmware is being developed that will solve this issue. I am surprised that it isn't out yet though given the age of the products involved. Is there an official list that details what features/bugs are being looked into? It would be a pleasure to be of any service to the management team to help fix their support mechanisms. Feel free to have someone message me, if they want to pursue this.

Thanks again for the info. I am happy to hear that the issue is knowne a solution is being worked on.

If you have any feature requests or bugs to report please post them in the 1.05 feature thread that is on these forums so that we can keep track of them for future firmwares.

Hello,

Before to start, sorry for my poor english  :x

So, i'm in the same case of "Lucid",
I just bought a DSM-510, (i just received it this morning in fact :p ) and I'm the owner of of DNS-323.

I've activated the Upnp AV server on my NAS, The DSM-510 see my NAS but can't get the folder list :"(.
In fact he don't see nothing.
When i try to use the function "folders" in the "server" menu, i've an error :

"Retrieving List" -> "The request action was unsuccessful"
and after
"Failed to retrieved list"

What the matter ?

I dont understand the solution give to Lucid O.O, can you help me please ?
Maybe the structure of the directory shared by the NAS have a bad structure ? ( sub directory not allowed ? )

For informations :

The DNS-323 have the 1.06 firmware version
the DSM-510 have the 1.08 firmware version

Have you used the media server on the DNS-323 for any other devices/applications?

Make sure you go to the UPNP AV page and click the REFRESH button on the page to rescan your devices media. Also make sure the path is set to the folder containing your media.

Thank you for your quick answer :)

Have you used the media server on the DNS-323 for any other devices/applications?

Yes, in deed, i've use it with windows media player 12 but it's on the RTM of Windows Seven -> The Server is not seen by WMP.

I've also tried with windows media player 11 on Windows Vista, but when i try to open one of the media folder, i've an error message like "The connection was refused by the server, try to contact your device administrator"

Make sure you go to the UPNP AV page and click the REFRESH button on the page to rescan your devices media. Also make sure the path is set to the folder containing your media.

Yes it's done.
To be more precise, my media are stored in severals sub directory. And All the sub-directory are stored in a main directory that is specified in the UPNP AV page.

Between my previous message in now, I've updated the NAS with the 1.08beta firmware, and the problem it's the same.

[Edit] :

My directory structure :
--Root
      ---Multimedia
             ---Movies
                   ---"SomeSubDirectories*
                               ---*SomeVideoFiles*
             ---Pictures
                   ---"SomeSubDirectories*
                               ---*SomePicturesFiles*
             ---Music
                   ---"SomeSubDirectories*
                               ---*SomeMusicFiles*

I've an evolution (i don't know why  ... ) , now on the DSM-510 the error message have disapear, i can use the function "folder", i see the folder "multimedia" but, i don't see the sub folders ..., i've tried to put a picture file directly in the "multimedia" directory but the DSM-510 don't see it ...

[Edit 2: ]
I have another problem with my DNS-323, the both light are amber after few minutes of working. Never i was this probleme before the activation of the UPNP AV server .... I've test the both disk with the manufacturer tool, and they are ok (5hours of test Oo ). The two disk are the same ...

I've also see anything with the refresh of the UPNP AV server, it's maybe nothing. When i launch the refresh, i see the progress bar. At about 70%, the progress bar go directly at 100% !

Thank you by advance for your answer !

I am having the exact same problem on windows 7. I called DLink and they told it would work on 7 as opposed to vista. I couldn't even get WMP to recognize it in vista. Seeing it in the left pane in & got me really excited only to be very disappointed when it could not connect.

I have exactly the same problem.  Windows 7 RTM sees the DNS-323 AV Server from Windows Media Player, but I get a message "The remote media library did not allow the connection...".

I am running firmware 1.06.

Interestingly the Window 7 Evaluation version I ran earlier couldn't even see the DNS-323 AV Server.

Bootleg my a**e, Windows 7 RTM is available early to those that pay for MSDN subscription and alike.

A genuine answer to my problems is what I am seeking, not some jealous half wit too afraid to put his hands in his pockets.

bootleg RTM of win7 obviously...
Funny, I have a fully licensed and legal copy of Windows 7 Release, you assume facts not in evidence.  In point of fact, MSDN, Technet, and some Volume License customers all have access to the release.

I agree with the thread starter, maybe you should stick to the problem and not try to be the piracy patrol.  ::)

What about TwonkyMedia Server instead of UPnP Server ?  Any comment or experience  with DNS-323 and DSM-510 or DSM-520 playing DivX movies ?
