DNS-323 & DSM-320 (at my end)
« on: December 27, 2007, 02:21:13 PM »

OK

I have been trying to get these two devices to work together for damned near 6 months and I have had it with D-Link's POSITIVELY USELESS AND UNRESPONSIVE TECH SUPPORT!

I have a slew of MP4 files (the format the that D-Link says is preferred!) and when I try to serve them from DNS-323 using it's built in AV PNP server....The DSM-320 sees the server fine but when I try to play them it complains about them being the wrong format!  >:(

All I want to do is to have the dns-323 serve the MP4 files that the DSM-320 claims it needs to play over a wired network!

What is so freakin' hard about this?

The two units are made by same damned company!

Does the storage department not communicate with the media department?!

If there is some special way I have to create the mp4 files can someone please let me in on it?

I swear to god I will NEVER by another d-link product for my company or my home if this is not resolved toot sweet!

Are you able to stream these MP4 files from the Dlink media server software from you PC properly?

continuing from the previous post, i.e. with media server software like tversity. the problem may actually be something to do with the format and not the device. Using another media server program would help to eliminate this as a possibility.

Also, most media format 'standards' have a habit of not actually being a 'standard' for example, there are at least 3 different types of .avi files. You shouldn't have to encode the .mp4's 'special' but the program you're using might already be encoding them in a 'special' way not coinciding with the 'standard'.

If I remember correctly .mp4 is a format used by apple and the audio only format is .m4a (the non DRM one anyway). which might also be your problem.

However if you're trying to use video files, i would suggest trying divx and seeing if anything changes, if it doesn't, and none of the other things work, one or both of the devices may be defective however that is very unlikely as when electronics are defective they tend not to work at all.

I hope this helps. :)

What software are you using to create these MP4 files? What Profile are they using? MP4 has multiple profiles ranging from Standard to h.264 so the profile may not be one compatible with the DSM-320.

Actually...

I am using NERO to create the MP4 files.

The version of Nero is 7 and it's updated to the latest build.

What are the settings I should use to create video files that the DSM-320 will like?

While i'm not familiar with nero 7 (I use linux) I'd guess default settings would work..if it doesn't have that option then try standard everything.

Also, i would recommend experimenting with a small video file so you aren't encoding for 20 minutes each time. :)

From Nero Recode the Nero Digital Category should be set to "Nero Digital" and the Nero Digital Profile should be set to "Standard". Are these the settings you are using to create your files?

I tried this and it failed!

DNS-323 AV PNP to DSM-320

Nero MP4's fail to play.

I am going to install the software media server and see if the files work that way!
