DIR-825 and the dreaded Vista
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:22:52 PM »

hey all!

brand new to this forum, but I am desperate for an answer!!!

I have a new 825 which i just installed into an environment with 3 wireless desktops running Windows 7, 4 laptops all the same model purchased on the same day and one notebook running WinXP as well as an older desktop running a small peer to peer file sharing network, not wireless. The first thing I did was update the firmware like a good little teckkie. I then configured my network, set up both bands, hard-coded my dns numbers, and connected. the file sharing pc has not once dropped it's connection. the Win7 machines have been online ever since i configured them, and the notebook has not had any issues either. All 4 of the Vista machines refuse to stay connected, and 1 refuses to even connect saying something about low signal while showing 5 bars. I took one of them home and it sat connected online all night to the cisco router i have at home. i brought it back to the office and it won't connect to the 825 setup there.

I also tried to set up a print server which was a terrible waste of my time. AS LONG as i left it connected to the router, it worked, but the printer can't sit in the closet! when i set the PS up in the office it needs to be in, NO ONE can even see it and it can't be seen from the xp box connected to the router. I have triple checked all of the MAC addresses on my list and they are all correct.

If this has been addressed, i am sorry for the re-thread. Please help, i am feeling at a loss but i have no qualms about replacing this 2 week old device!

sneaker-net anyone?

thanks!

You running any windows firewalls or Anti Virus softwares?

Are all the PC's part of the same workgroup?

is the printserver on the same subnet?

WHat H/W is the router?

What wireless band are you using?

Sorry for asking but its one of the many questions that pop in my mind after reading your post

From past experiences Norton does not play nice and will play a factor on your network communicating. I know some people hate doing this but try uninstalling the AV temporarily and see if that makes a difference.

If you have no use for the 5Ghz radio might as well turn it off.

What type of encryption are you using over you wireless? Are you using the same SSID at home and at your office?

I understand that you upgraded your firmware but what is the hardware version of the router? I've heard A1's and B's are way different from each other. Rev B's I believe or open source

as for the norton, the network had no issue with connectivity until i put a dir-825 into place.

from what i have heard, turning off the 5ghz won't turn off, but it is to be used for a print server.

we are using wep2.

I don't use a laptop that goes back and forth, not sure that matters as 5 of 9 devices that AREN'T Vista have no issues connecting.

the hardware is an A1.

thanks

Do you have the same SSID for both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz network names?

And wireless cards have the newest drivers available?

I had the same problem with Windows 7 beta and the DIR-825. After a lot of searching I found a reference to the "Wi-FI Protected Setup" feature being a problem. I disabled it in my router and the connection drops stopped.

For reference, I run firmware 1.01. The feature is found under Advanced-WiFi Protected Setup.

As to the comments about Norton, it works as designed as far as I can tell. It installs a firewall that may need configuring to grant access to a local network.
