New Laptop to network doesn't take IP address within range
« on: December 30, 2009, 10:18:44 AM »

I have a Sony Vaio that is 7 years old that will not accept one of the IP addresses in my range 192.nnn.nnn.1 o 192.nn.nnn.199. Instead, it chooses its ow 168.254.22.220 even though I have set the device to "Obtain an IP address automatically." I have even reserved an IP address for this device using the Sony's network adapter's MAC address. It shows the device as connected but I can't ping to or from and Internet Explorer isn't connected.

Another issue I have is that my DIR655 is configured for WPA-2 and the Sony'swirless adapte doesn't appear to support that. I tried swiching to the more compatible WPA but it threw everthing off and my rimary computer lost the wireless connection. Is it that the Sony, being old, doesn't support teh protocol? Can a new drivefor the adapter be used oram I out of luck and must convert back to WPA?

Thanks.

A 168 address means that the laptop is not seeing the DHCP server.   What Operating system do you have on the laptop?

Dave, the address was actually 169 (typo on my part) but I suspect the same conclusion. My primary system is a Dell with Vista Ultimate while the other laptop has Windows XP Home Edition with Sevice Pack 3. I even tried definig the IP address explicitly since I reserved 192.168.0.192 for the Sony, but still nothing (I didn't know what Gateway to specifiy on the Sony in his case, so that may be the issue).

Still, the DIR655 should assign the Sony an address and then connect. When I check the Sony's net adapter, it says its connected though I can't ping sucessfully frm the Dell to Sony, or Sony to Dell (or 655 for that matter).

Try this patch on the laptop, I had to do this to my XP machines to get WPA2 support:

Thanks. Will do, but keep in mind I had trouble with wired connections and connecting wirelessly.

I tried this patch and because I have SP3 installed, it supercedes this patch, so I am up to date and still having problems.
