Just got my router. Looking to update firmware, is the latest 1.21 stable, or one of the lower updates?

Thanx  :)

Personally? If it shipped with 1.02? I'd say stay there.

Some of the firmware updates don't allow you to revert to earlier firmware revisions, so be careful before you update.

That said, I've read that 1.21NA Beta 8 is the most stable of the current generation, if your router is already in the 1.20 range... I'd suggest you read these forums before diving in.

Hope that helps,
Hank

I agree, if your router is at it's mfr release, stay there. The released v1.21NA on the dlink web site is not stable. The betas 03 and 08 are the most stable. Know that if you updated to any v1.21 version and want to go back to pre v1.21, YOU CAN'T!!!. Read some of the posts on here and do some research before you think about updating. Right now the Betas are stable as far as wired goes, however wireless still needs some work. Not bad however not worth the update. Rule: IF it works, Don't fix it!  ::)

It's good that you stopped by before doing something that you would regret, like flashing the fw on your router.  DO NOT UPDATE IT!  I'd almost tell you since you just got it to put it back in the box and return it for a refund.  Get something else like a netgear wndr3700.  This was a descent router until the fw went past 1.02.  If you flash the router past 1.16 you will not be able to roll back PERIOD!  Then you will have  a real expensive brick of a router just like lots of other folks.  When d-link replaced my a1 with a new a2 I flashed to 1.16 since it already had 1.12 and I couldn't roll it back to 1.02.  Do not make the same mistake that others have by flashing your fw.

I've had my Dlink 4500 since about a week after they started selling them.  I had the money to blow (250$ish?) to buy one of these thinking it would be wondrous.  Its not been awesome.... Deff not worth 250$, hell i've had about 5 wrt54g's and NEVER EVER had any issue.  I decided to upgrade the firmware on my 4500A1 and i was like i should read and make sure no one has ever had any issues updating the firmware.   Holy oh my god.  Really Dlink?  Fail bad on your part as far as i can see.  Sad i have 1.02 and everyone... and i mean EVERYONE says STAY ON THAT ONE.  Glad mines not messed up like some of you others.  Really sorry to hear and hope the best for all of you.
PS. Once my Dlink dies I'll keep this in mind as well as all the other Dlink POS product's I've bought in the past and make sure i go with something a bit more reliable then this Discount Chinese Sweat Shop Hardware.
pss. Thanks everyone here for all your info and post.  If it wasn't for all of you I'd have a nice new paper weight for my desk. Kudos.

Well if you think EVERYONE is having problems, I for one am Not and i'm on A1 HW and using v1.22 Beta FW. And there are others that are happy too. Ya not everyone is happy and  ya, it's not perfect but not every router FW is perfect. Were all here to help make it better. Why not give some positive feed back next time and helpful suggestions. We all know we can criticize, how about constructive ideas.

good point never buy d-link!

got my  LINKSYS running now WRT610N working great

going to try to see if I can get a refund for my 4500

Router keeps re-booting everyday! it's the biggest piece of junk I ever purchased

running beta 08

 >:(

I bought a new Linksys WRT610N rev. 2 as well and I'm not looking back. I have an A1 and an A2 and the wireless issues were simply not worth it. I was on the newest beta on both as well.  D-Link simply cannot program proper firmware and these issues have been going on WAAAAY too long...too bad.  Hopefully they will fix it and I'll come back.

Good luck to all of you...

WOW!! :o  I was looking up current firmware to DL because I noticed mine was still at original FW (A1 FW1.0)  After reading Im not upgrading.  I have to manually set my UpNp but ohh well.. not risking it now, I really have no issues with my router at the moment.  Wireless and wired are running fine and its the best router I've had for Xbox Live (Had a Linksys, kept booting me off Live).  I guess I will have to keep checking to see when the latest and greatest will be stable..

Thanks to everyone out there giving us a heads up!

There do seem to be lots of problems posted on this forum, but lets not forget that the vast majority of people probably don't come here to gripe about it because it just worked out of the box and they didn't care about updating FW.  I think that's the case based on reviews you read for online sales sites.  I'm still using 1.14 A2 HW and never had any problems.  No resets or dropped connections.

You could upgrade to v1.02, v.1.12 or v1.13. Those builds are still available.

It should be safe to go to 1.02. I've been running that since release. I'm actually surprised to find anyone with FW1.0, as they were mainly review units. In fact, I'd suggest moving to FW1.02, but certainly not beyond for the moment.

I don't have any issues with the UPNP, but I only have the first checkbox checked, as I don't want to risk the security implications of allowing any software on one of the systems on my network to disable or remap ports.

Let us know if you do update and how the experience goes. If you do, I recommend re-entering the data rather than trying to import settings, as that seems to add issues when moving between firmware revisions.

Hope this helps,
Hank

I'm not going to bash the DLG-4500, but if I was not having problems I'd have never "search for & found the users forums"... does that make sense?

SIMPLY BECAUSE I'M HERE... TELLs YOU I'M HAVING PROBLEMS.

I've honestly dumped 20-30 hours of my time trying to make this router "do what I paid for it to do"... so if my time is worth $$$... then we can see I've paid a heck of a lot more than the mere 250.00 I paid for this equipment.

so, lets not bash it without "real data"... but realize most "average users" find their way to the forums to fix problems, not become some 'uber-nerd' to squeeze every ounce out of a product...

Whats the fixes between 1.0 and 1.02?  Is it worth it?

Also,  There is a new 1.22NA firmware that just came out on the 28th.  Im going to search a bit and see what they say about that.   Maybe better results than past I hope..

1.02 is perfectly stable.  If I were you, I would not go past that firmware though.  Having said that, if everything is working fine for you as is, why not just stay where you are?

My original was an A1 with 1.02 on it.  Ran perfectly and had an uptime of 36 days before I decided to flash it to 1.21NA...once I did that, the router would reboot every 3 days or so and usually when hitting the wireless hard with transfers etc.  Upgraded to the newer beta's (1.22NA 03 etc) and it would no longer reboot as often but then the wireless would drop thousands of packets and errors galore (I had virtually zero with 1.02).

Eventually, D-Link swapped me out for an A2 and no difference so I went out and bought a Linksys WRT610N and I have had zero issues and everything works great.

There's my story and now with the ability to flash backwards, I may try that and see if I can find a way to go back to 1.02....
