Noisy fan inside :(
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:18:07 AM »

Hello,

Has anyone already tested this equipment with a hard drive inside? I have connected caviar 320GB, but the cooling is very loud with hard disk enabled :( Does anyone know how to deal with this problem? For so much cash that it may be better able to solve the problem of heat?

My last router was a dir-655, warmed up a lot more than 685 with disk together and did not need refrigeration :(

Is this standard or is it just the number of defective units? Someone has a similar problem?

The fan is attached, even as the drive is able to sleep - it is probably the strangest thing - because the disk does not work with full energy, it is not so warm, what were they cool?

Not that loud on my router....
But it may become an issue after a year, as the router is always on!
(Then you could always request an RMA or something to get it replaced.)

I think the fan thing starts when you inserts a disk, maybe done by hw(design)
or maybe possible to adjust in the firmware if the disk starts working....
(Does it sound bad without the disk?)

My fan is also noisy. If I did not access the harddrive the fan never comes on. I did a reset today and this time the fan has not switched off. For the price this unit I am not impressed the only good thing is the high speed throu-put. This is one of the worst routers I have brought  :'( followed closely by negear. PS I turned it off for the night and it seems to have settled down for the time being.

I have installed an Hitachi Travelstar HD20500 in my DIR-685. This drive has a reputation of being exceptionally quiet and energy efficient. The internal fan in my router has only momentarily come on when the router is first booting and has never run otherwise. Because the Hitachi drive is so quiet itself, I literally have to put my ear up to the router to even hear any type of noise (a very slight hum) coming from the router. Heat is also not a problem with the router/drive combo. My old router (that was just a router) felt much hotter to the touch than the DIR-685 gets. Perhaps you have a defective router or possibly the model hard drive you have in it runs hot.
