HELP (RESOLVED)
« on: January 06, 2010, 09:46:03 AM »

I have a DGL-4500 router.  We had about 4 laptops using it wirelessly on an unsecured network.  Last night, we tried to change the settings to WPA-encrypted, but after we enabled WPA the internet stopped working.  All of us had full signal strength from the router and could connect onto the network, but there was no internet.  I then noticed that the router itself was not connected to the internet or modem (on the 192.168.0.1 site it said DISCONNECTED under WAN with no IP address).

We've tried power-cycling the modem and router, resetting the router alone while reconfiguring an unsecured connection, and calling d-link support (which told us to update the firmware...).  I have no idea what to do.  I'll try downloading the latest firmware, but something tells me that's not the issue as my problem doesn't seem to be addressed by any of the fixes listed under the patch.

What is the current FW version that is loaded. Do not get the FW updated from the dlink web site, it's not working well. Let me know the FW version and the date code next to it. It's located on the Stats/Device info. Usually the 1st page you seen when you log in to it. My 4500 is setup for Wireless N only and WPA-2 Personal. I haven't had any problems connecting to the internet with it. We might need to walk thru some steps in checking your settings.

802.11 Band : 2.4GHz

802.11 Mode : Mixed

Enable Auto Channel Scan : Enabled

Transmission Rate : Auto

Channel Width : 20 Mhz

Number of Spatial Streams :

Visibility Status : Visible

Wireless Security Mode: None

Since we attempted to switch it to WPA, we've reset the router to the default settings, and we haven't tried to configure anything (including internet) as of this last reset.  That's why security is none ^^  We tried to configure the internet with no security just to see if that would at least get us back on the web, but even configured that way, we all had the same problem: could connect to network, couldn't connect to internet.

I presume that a wired connected PC works when directly connected to the 4500?

Go in and check the DHCP settings. Revoke all connections for the Laptop at this time. Need to make sure that the 4500 sets up a new IP address for the wireless connection.

Ok, then, lets configure this, using only one Laptop, make sure others are off or disable the wireless on  the others for now.

Enable Wireless : Checked

Give a simple wireless network name to be seen.

802.11 Band : 2.4GHz

802.11 Mode : Mixed B and G only.

Enable Auto Channel Scan : Enabled

Transmission Rate : Best/Auto

Visibility Status : Visible

Security Mode : WPA Personal

WPA Mode : Auto WPA or WPA2

Cypher Type:TKIP or AES

Group Key: 3600

Pre-Shared Key :  Give a simple and easy password here to allow the wireless connect for now. Can chg it later to something more complex.

Please let me know that status of ur internet settings and DHCP settings listed in Basic Internet and Networking.

Once the wireless is set up, connect the LT and connect wirelessly. Go in to the 4500 and the wireless LT should be listed with an address. After this, try a simple web page. You should get internet at this point, there isn't much else to configure. The wireless internet connection is automatic an the router routes the traffic from the internet to the LT.

I'm using a Time Warner cable connection.  A wired PC does not work when plugged directly into the router, because the router is not connected to the internet.

I'll try what you just wrote ^^

Ok, if the wired PC does not work connected to the 4500, then there could be an issue with the 4500 not getting fully connected to the cable modem.

Go to Basic and Network Settings and let me know if DNS relay is check or unchecked. Mine is checked.
Go to Basic and Internet and manual and disable or uncheck Advanced DNS Service.

Need to check the Basic/Internet settings and make sure it's getting connected to the cable modem correctly and your ISP is providing proper addressing from the modem to the router. You can check the status of the router and the ISP by going to the Status/Device Info section of the routers web page. Look under the WAN:
Example:

Connection Type : DHCP Client

QoS Engine : Active

Cable Status : Connected

DNS Status : Online

Network Status : Established

Connection Up Time : 0 Day 22 Hour 47 Min 56 Sec

MAC Address : 00:21:91:E6:5A:69

Authentication & Security :

IP Address :
This address should be a 2 digit starting address, ##.###.###.###

Subnet Mask : ###.###.###.###

Default Gateway : ###.###.###.###

Primary DNS Server : ###.###.###.###

Secondary DNS Server : ###.###.###.###

Advanced DNS : Disabled

DNS relay is checked.  When I hit internet and then manually configure, I don't see a box for Advanced DNS.  Nothing has been configured in Basic-->Internet, should I try opening the wizard and configuring?  We did that yesterday to no avail

Hmm, Lets try Manually Configure the Internet.
Should look something like this:

Internet Connection Type

My Internet Connection is : Set this for Dynamic IP (DHCP)
Some ISPs will have you use a different method of connecting. So this might not work. Call and get them on the phone. This could be a reason why the 4500 isn't picking up on the Cable modem information automatically and getting internet access.

You should see a section called Advanced DNS Service
Enable Advanced DNS Service : Uncheck and disable this.

I entered these addresses in from the Status/Device Info/WAN section. These may or may not be needed.
Primary DNS Server : Need to ask ur ISP about this address

Secondary DNS Server : Need to ask ur ISP about this address

MTU : (bytes) MTU default = 1500
Mines set for 1492 at this time. Some say 1500 is too much.
Make sure the cable coming from the cable modem is good and it's plugged in to the WAN port on the back of the 4500. Plug the PC into the LAN port, any one will do.

I would get your ISP on the phone and have them walk you thru getting the cable modem talking to the 4500. Most ISPs will help you in this area. I can't guarantee all will. Be nice and ask. Once the Internet section of the 4500 is setup, then both wired and wireless should work just fine. Use one PC directly connected first so you can get it all set up correctly. Once you get it set up and tested on the PC then you can start adding PCs and setup the wireless. Let us know how it goes. Small Steps.

OK, finally got the router working.  Configuring manually and calling ISP worked; still don't know why it did that in the first place, but thanks for the help!!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D
