Missing files and folders
« on: January 06, 2010, 01:01:20 PM »

Hello,

All of a sudden some files and folders went missing from one of my drives. When I try to create a new folder with the same name as the missing one, I get an error saying that this name is already taken. The free disk space hasn't changed, it looks like the files are still there, only have become invisible. I am running on the latest firmware, 2 1TB drives in standard mode. I have also tried the new disk scan option and it didn't find any errors.

I would greatly appreciate your suggestions on how to get the files back or at least how to get rid of them completely without having to reformat the drive.

If I take that drive out, connect directly to a linux PC and run e2fsck, will it repair the file system?

Well, it would certainly give you more options to attempt to recover the data.

Here's an update, if anyone's interested. All missing files and folders are perfectly visible under ubuntu. I ran e2fsck and it found and corrected quite a few errors. Will put the drive back into nas this evening, hopefully no data will be missing.
