Constant Crashing
« on: January 08, 2010, 01:00:08 AM »

I'm on 1.21 Beta 8 (after coming from 1.21 release).
I can't transfer files over wireless at all.

The router simply crashes and reboots itself.

I've disabled the logging.
I've disabled the game fuel.
I've disabled the dns relay.
I've disabled WISH.
I've disabled WPS.

I've disabled every little thing in order to try to give the router as much room as possible to do a simple little task.

I've had this issue with this router since I've had it (it came with firmware version 1.15 I think).

How much did D-Link pay review sites?  This router is absolute trash when it comes to wireless.
I simply don't understand how a company can release a product in such a state.

Just tried 1.21 Beta 3.

It's somehow worse!

What HW version are you using? I'm also using Beta 03 and have not seen an major crashing. What wireless mode are you using? I'm currently using N mode only. Have you tried each mode by themselves instead of mixed mode. I might start with B or G mode only. Everything else to auto. Also check the wireless settings and options on the PC your using to connect to the 4500. There is another thread on here that was resolved by checking the settings and seemed to resolve connection issues. Also make sure the drivers, if any, are up to date for the wireless device your using. I'm using a Mac Book Pro so I don't have any drivers. Some Mfrs do however. Let us know how it this goes.

My settings:
I've disabled all but 3 options in logging. Firewall, System and Critical.
I've enabled the gaming and game fuel. If you don't game or using any online gaming service, this can be disabled.
I've enabled the dns relay. Some say this works, some doesn't. Works for me when enabled.
I've disabled WISH.
I've enabled WPS.
I've enabled SPI Firewall settings: Endpoint for both UDP/TCP.

Whatever the latest one is probably (1A?) since it was bought less than a month ago.

I'm using N and G because I have N and G clients - a G laptop, Wii, and PS3.
I can't in good conscience drop to G mode on a new $150 router which I bought specifically for N mode when I have a reliable, and let's face it at this point, superior WRT54GL that the 4500 is supposed to be replacing.
I'm not going to run THREE routers at once in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.  My N clients are 2.4 GHz only, and 5 GHz wouldn't work because I have units across walls and upstairs/downstairs.  I already have an isolated DI-524 running in B mode for our Nintendo DSes and other devices that are WEP only (it's unplugged most of the time).
There's nothing wrong with the settings on my PCs or other devices, and all the drivers are up to date.
Yes, your MBP uses drivers - they're just included in the OS.

I've disabled all but Firewall & Security and Critical in the logging options.
I've disabled gamefuel even though I do have rules set up for it.
I've disabled the DNS relay.
I've disabled WISH.
I've disabled WPS.
I've left SPI at default settings.

I can crash the thing simply by transferring a large file from one PC to another.
I can watch the transfer speed hit about 1 MB/second for 1 second, then drop to 0 for 2 seconds, then go back up for 1 second, then back down.  After a minute or two the file transfer dies as the router reboots.

I had a FEW random restarts with the shipping firmware, but the main issue was UPnP - it did not work at all.  1.21 has fixed UPnP.  Downloading from websites / bittorrent, gaming, etc. is all fine over wireless.  The problem comes the instant I try to transfer files, stream video, etc. between two wireless devices.
(There is still the odd random restart, but I can live with that since it's fairly rare.)

What happens if you using an only mode for transferring files? I'm curious if this does this on G only or N only.  ???

I can't test until later today.
But if it works in N only or in G only it won't help me at all.

Conker just look on the bottom of the unit and see what version it is.

Let us know. I know that Beta 08 WiFi has some random disconnects. I have regressed back to Beta 03 and have been enjoying the WiFi there. Much better, no disconnects that I'm finding. I don't use mixed mode since I have different WiFi for B and G. Mainly N mode right now. Once you check out mode only WiFi, I'm hoping that we can figure out what works best for you. I would load up Beta 03 though for stable WiFi.

I did a hard reset, reflashed to beta 8, did a hard reset, and then put in all my settings manually.

I'm running in mixed mode with less crashing.
It does crash, but it seems to only take out one of my G clients, not the whole router.

I haven't tried any large transfers or much streaming yet, but it was far better than I had before (it would crash instantly 100% of the time).

It's rev A2, by the way.

If one of your G clients seems to having an issue, I'm wondering if this G Client could be to root cause? Are the WiFi drivers updated and is the G Client WiFi options setup correctly? Just ideas to look at. Any other clients having problems with the 4500?

It's got updated drivers and is set up correctly.
No, it's not just one of the G clients.

Then I would call DLink and see what they have to say. Could have a bad unit. Let us know what goes on. Sorry we can't seem to get it working better for you.
