Brand New DIR-655
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:52:00 PM »

My original setup:
Linksys WRT54GS router
with a Zonet ZEW2500P 802.11g USB network adapter

My new setup that I just upgraded to:
D-Link DIR-655 router
D-Link DNS-321 NAS box
with a Rosewill RNX-N1 USB network adapter for my HTPC

Now the first thing I did was upgrade the firmware on both the DIR-655 and the DNS-321.  Right after, I came on these forums and read that many were having issues with the new 1.32NA firmware (I hope this isn't the source for my problems).

The issue is that I am getting terrible connection speeds with my new setup.  I followed the sticky on this forum to get my connection to 300mbps. When I initially connect it says I am connected at 270mbps, then after a while it goes down and then jumps up a bit until it eventually stays at around 13.5mbps or lower.  Throughput is at 1kbps!!!

With my old setup I was able to transfer files between computers at a rate of 1.5 megabytes per second.  With the new gear I'm getting a few kilobytes per second.

I know there is something severely wrong because it definitely should not be slower than my old gear, but it somehow is and I am racking my brain trying to fix this.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,
fonzie

Since you already have upgraded to 132NA then you might as well upgrade to the beta which fixes problems in the release version.

ok, I'll try that.

So are my problems consistent with the problems that other people had when they upgraded the firmware?

In other words, is it most likely the firmware that is causing these slow speeds or incorrect settings on my router?

on a side note, is there anything negative or risky about updating to beta firmware?

As far as setting I have everything on defaults except for wireless channel which I input manually.

It is always risky upgrading firmware...on that note all I can say is I have not had any problem with the beta.

Bought my DIR-655 months ago to replace my DI-624+.  Like DI-624+, it is connected to a DSL modem which the modem act as DNS/DHCP server.  Connection went out smoothly for all my WiFi terminals.  Problem is the new one does not display the IP address of all terminals connected, only MAC address.  Is there additional setting I need to do to enable the IP address display?  Thanks.

So I connected my computer directly to my DIR-655 router to see if this would resolve speed issues.  It shows my connection as "1.0 Gbps" but the fastest I can transfer going from my computer to my DNS-321 is 8.5megabytes/second.  Shouldn't I be getting a speed of around 16megabytes/second at least?

would this be a problem with the new 1.32NA firmware?  I still haven't ruled that out as a possibility and I haven't updgraded to the Beta firmware.

Beta 1.32NA doesn't fix my issues.  I think since you're still in your 30 day window, you should take it back and get something else.

I was having similar problems with my wifi dropping to and staying below 30mbps.  I ran across this after looking through a linksys forum for my adapter and now my connection is in the 200mbps range.

go to tools and advanced wireless tabs in the router setup and set
beacon interval - 50 , RTS and Fragmentation threshold - 2304

If you are smart enough then you CAN downgrade the firmware.

I don't think smart enough is the problem -- I think the problem is amount of time.  Feel free to enlighten us, as I personally don't have much more time to troubleshoot this $80 device.  If I can safely go back to a working firmware with 30 minutes of effort and not turning it into a brick, that would certainly be preferable to researching a replacement device.

Can't post info about how to do something against D-Link policy and/or forum rules.

Also, I don't want to be responsible if people brick their router trying to downgrade firmware.

As far as I'm concerned, it's only a few more issues away from brick status anyway. =)

But I do understand.  Since you probably can't even PM me, I'll hunt around on the Interwebs some more and see if I can get clues.  At the moment, I'm leaning towards disabling everything and trying my luck with just using the device as a Gig-E switch.  Then I'll just bringing my old MN-700 out of retirement for Internet connectivity and reliability.  Slow and old as it is, at least it stays up for more than 3 days at a time.

Or maybe I'll just find an old PC and set it up to route for my network.  Seems like an overkill, but I'm sick of wasting hours troubleshooting only to find that a simple reboot makes my problems go away for a while.  Plus, if it doesn't work, I know how to get support for it.
