One thing to note is if you apply permissions to one folder, all folders have to have permissions, you can't have anonymous shares and password protected shares together, it's either all or none.

That is why I am still running firmware version 1.04 as this firmware allows just that, but I am getting very close to needing to update my HDD's to 2TB drives so I will need to update the firmware and that mean losing this feature. I can not understand why this feature was removed from this box as this is one of the reason I picked this NAS was so I could secure some of the shares while the other shares are open for anyone to use.

The question that I now have is D-Link are you going to put this feature back into a future firmware or do I have to buy another NAS that has this feature and move away from the DNS-323?   ???

Thanks
Rodney

I know that you need to configure things slightly differently, but is it really that big a hardship to have to create another account to access these shares?

Eg my media player previously had open access to certain shares and now with the latest firmware I just created an account for it.

Could you give more details on your setup and what you are trying to achieve. It's almost imposible to advise without more info :)
