DIR-655 Download Speeds Very Slow...
« on: January 13, 2010, 02:51:25 PM »

I'm paying to get Download Speeds of 25Mbps from my cable provider.

If I plug my computer directly into my cable modem, I get 24.98 Mbps every time.

Using the same speed test, if I go through the DIR-655 I get rates from 2.92 to 10 Mbps.

I'm on Firmware 1.32NA.

I'm ready to go out and buy a different brand Router.

Any suggestions before I do?

You should probably see some of the threads about Jumbo frames and also about MTU sizes.  It may help in your case.  Also there are some settings in the OS you may need to reset. If you're using Windows 7, run:

"netsh int tcp show heur" to display your window scaling status.

Try re-flashing and starting from scratch too.  Though I should warn that it may still be a lost cause.

In my experience, this router running 1.32NA is just slower than many others I've tried.  With earlier firmware, I hear it's a bit better, but still slows down after a few weeks of uptime, particularly with heavy torrent use.  There are others who will disagree with me, but if you're within your return window, just take it back and don't have second thoughts.

Hello JAH97701

I had the same problem.

I read somewhere that a solution to the problem maybe to go back to factory default ( reboot the router and unplug the power adapter wait a minute and power it on again wait a minute and log on again ) and upload the firmware ( again ), new one at this time is 1.33NA (downloaded at the us wesite (NA = North America, for the poeople not from us)) but the old firmware will do also. ( note: if you upload the new firmware the waranty will expire for the people in europe and is not downgradable to the old firmware). Then start from scratch and after every little change in the settings reboot the router and unplug the power adapter wait a minute and power it on again wait a minute and log on again

this worked for me  :)

This makes no sense to me but it worked.
On latest version of BIOS 1.34NA, 3-4 weeks ago I noticed a performance loss.
1. I saved current config in case I needed to restore.
2. I reset to factory defaults and did not help, still had performance issue.
3. I reflashed BIOS with version 1.34NA and my performace was back.
4. Reloaded settings that I had saved (all my settings) and performance was still back.

Perhaps there are some guru's out there that could explain how this worked?????

Hi all,

Very sorry that I have reopened this thread, but have a question please?

I live in the UK and have the DIR-655 Router but find that the connection speed can be dire at times, my router is currently on version 1.31EU, I know it would void the warranty, but would I be able to install the latest NA version onto my Router? Or would I find that the router just wouldn't work anymore with me not being in the US?

Oh and my Router is Hardware Revision Version A2

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance

Mark.

It does not avoid your warranty to upgrade FW. Only installing 3rd party FW will it void the warranty.

Lets try some things first before updating, maybe might find an answer:
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
I would contact your ISP service and ask them to help you bridge the modem. If the modem can't be bridged then I would use the DMZ feature of the modem and input the IP address that the router gets from the Modem on put that in the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

If you want to update, please follow the FW update sticky in this forum.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. Checked with InSSIDer and there are around 5, all on different Channels

I decided to save the Settings on my Router and check and changed everything you suggested above, and I can't thank you enough, it's like I've got a new Router. Don't think I'll be messing around with any Firmware Update now

Again, many many thanks.
