DIR-655 not listing Default Gateway in CMD ipconfig
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:34:12 PM »

I have dusted off the old DIR-655 in hopes to turn it into an repeter for my N network.  I an unable to log into the web based config and when i try to find the IP after hard resets it doesn't make any since. Currently
IPv4 169.254.25.19
Subnet 255.255.0.0
Gateway (empty)

I have tried basic 10 sec reset and i have done 30/30/30 resets to no avail.... i've tried static ip in my pc etc.... Is this Router dead?

Try....

Unplug router from power

Release IP on computer --> start > run > cmd > ipconfig/release

Plug router in and let completely boot up
back to cmd window ipconfig/renew

Sounds like the behavior if DHCP gets disabled.

There has to be either a hard factory reset (not just unplug) and/or a default device IP.  You should be able to static configure an IP within the subnet and hit the default IP?

What procedure did you follow to reset it to factory defaults? If memory serves me correctly you do it with it powered up and you have to hold the button down for at least 10 seconds. You can double check that in the manual. From the looks of your ipconfig info your PC is not getting an IP address from the router, DHCP is not working. Try a different cable and make sure your PC is connected to one of the LAN jacks, and not to the WAN jack.

The 655 can't act as a repeater or any other type of client based connection.

.. and please don't say it can with the hidden WDS function. I've tried. Though it saves the WDS mac address in the field, the option to enable it disappears after a reboot. :P

But, yes. Hard reset the router with it plugged in. Make sure you are not running any other DHCP servers on your network, then connect the cable to a LAN port.

If that fails, well, the other thing to try is setting your computers IP manually.
