Permission issues on individual files
« on: January 17, 2010, 03:26:01 PM »

I ran a DNS-232 (firmware 1.06, no modifications) for quite a while now with no issues. Since a couple of weeks something strange happens : The access to some files is all of a sudden revoked for some users. If I log in with ftp I see a changed umask

-rwxrwxrwx    1 501      501       3097834 Oct 18 12:39 DSC03731.JPG (normal)
-rwx------    1 501      501       1074832 Oct 27 15:30 DSC03731a.jpg (the files with issues)

If I reset the defaults and restart I got this fixed so far however that can't be the solution...

One (or several) of 3 changes are probably causing this :

- I have upgraded 2 client PCs to Windows 7
- I have upgraded 1 client Mac to Snow Leopard
- I have created users & groups, before I had r/w for everyone to everything

Is there something I can do or is this a known issue ? Is there something in 1.08 that addresses this ?

Many thanks for any input !

It's probably the last item. Since users and groups have different rights now that could be the problem.

One user makes or edit's the file => he becomes owner and will be the only one with acces.
It can be a pain to set up rights correctly. You probably want to give multiple users Read acces but no Write.

Hmm, I experienced the issues for the first time with 2 users, both members of the same group, with group privilege being R/W on the whole Volume_1.

I then did the reset to fix it and set Volume_1 to R/W for ALL. There are still 2 users, both members of the same group, to access the DNS but the issue did re-appear

I can't spot anything set up wrong which could lead to that effect. As well if I connect with any of the 2 users from Win 7 I do not have access to those files, if I connect with the Mac I do.

I did analyze a bit further and it looks like the files with issues where saved from Win 7 (with PSE 8 ). Next thing I try is set back OpLocks to 'No' as this might make a platform depended difference ... ?

Again, any hint welcome !

What I noticed is that when I copy (better, let a program copy or move) files from my Ubuntu-server machine to the DNS323 (which is mounted with R\W rights on the server), the files copy OK, but I get a "failed to reset file-rights" for the moved/copied files. This while there are no limitations set on the DNS.

Luckely the files are fully R/W after that so it does not cause any problems.

Not really your problem, but it show's there probably is something going on with user rights on the DNS.
