Using an existing ext2 formatted drive with dns-321
« on: January 21, 2010, 12:50:04 PM »

I have a 1.5TB WD usb drive that I just purchased. For now I want to use it as a USB drive, but my plan eventually is to remove the enclosure and add it to my dns-321, which currently has a single seagate drive. My setup will always be two separate volumes.

Now, although I am using the USB drive with a windows machine, I considering formatting the drive as ext2, using it with windows for now, then later add it to the dns-321. I am hoping that by doing this, I will not have to reformat the drive and lose any data I store on the drive.

I cannot test this now as if I crack open the USB drive, it would be hard to put it back together.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

If the drive is not formated in the DNS-321, it most likely will not be happy when used with the drive. It uses a specific structure and if you format it (for example in a PC) then the structure will be different.

You really need to consider backup anyway!

Remember: Data you don't have at least two copies of is data you don't care about.
