Can't keep a constant speed.

I'm having two problems I hope to resolve.

1. While downloading files I get fluctuating speeds. The speed goes from my max dl speed and drops the builds back up. It continues to do this over the length of the download. I've turned advanced dns and qos engine, and I've tried it with them on, which lead to the same result.

2. While using the internet before it displays a page I get about a 3 second hang while it says resolving host. Again I've turned advanced dns on/off, I've tried to make google my dns no luck.

I'm running the 1.32 latest firmware. How can I fix these problems?

Since you're already unable to go back, try the 1.33 beta that was posted a few days ago.  You might also disable NTP (under time).

Doing those two things has (so far) helped me a lot.

Try OpenDNS or the Google DNS (4.4.4.4 / 8.8.8.8). ISP DNS is quite often slow.

For the downloading issue, it is hard to see whether this is a local issue or the http/FTP server on the other end...

I've tried both of those DNS.

Its definitely a router issue. When the cable modem is plugged directly into the computer no problems.

As an aside to this thread: I have been using the Google DNS servers for a few weeks, and have been happy with the performance.

Before people change their DNS from their ISP's they should benchmark DNS servers to see which ones are actually the fastest for them.

There are many apps that can do this, for example, DNS Benchmark.

For me my ISP's were the fastest beating out OpenDNS, Googles and even level 3 servers.

Good advice. GRC has been around for a long time. He definitely writes some cool, efficient, code.
