Try DAP (download accellerator plus) and see what speeds you get.

Your bittorrent client makes simultaneous connections and grabs bits and peices of information from different souces and puts them together again. So it appears that you are getting ~1Mb/s

When I use utorrent, I see max 800Kb/s or so, but when I download through the web, I won't get that unless I am the only one using the network and the server i'm downloading from is empty and doesn't limit speed per connection.

I think browser clients do not make simultaneous connections to a host which is why you see the results that you do.

You may see this affect when you download a file from two different web hosts. You will notice that the sum of the speeds equal near your alloted bandwidth cap that you subscribed to.

yea but if u download a file from apple.com such as itunes for example, the speed should be very high, i remember with the old router the speed was 900kb/s ..

can't account for the quality between the router and the isp and the internet and the servers on the other side and network load etc.

In the past with the old router, it was another time with different network conditions. IE: right now I can't get 200Kb/s from itunes but can get 700Kb/s from Microsofts download site.

So, I have to respectfully say that I don't believe that it's the router at all.

knock on a lot of wood. Usually it's the opposite with download speeds.

You know that a lot of HTTP and FTP sites have imposed bandwidth limitations on guest/downloaders? Having multiple connections will up the speed, but only if the number of max. connected clients on the server isn't maxed.

Because most HTTP or FTP webservers have an Uplink QoS in place for downloading clients.  They do this so that their WAN pipe does not get bogged down and impact their servers availability - they also pay a lot for bandwidth.  Most Web site owners want to limit the Website downtime to server issues and not ISP issues and they will cap single stream HTTP rates at 5Mbits/s and limit this by the client's public IP as well so a download accelerator that opens multiple streams to the webserver will not show and improvement in that case.

Torrents are different because bandwidth is heavily shared by leechers and seeds and not just the tracker, so you can potentially download as fast as all connected peers can upload to you.

Do a simple broadband speed test to confirm this at speedtest or DSLreports.  You should be getting at least 12Mbit/s since your Torrent speeds are 12Mbit.

I would use something else to check speeds as speedtest is whacked pretty much all the time depending on your ISP.

Dslreports has more accurate tests.

This is what speedtest gives me on a pretty much continuous basis and I have a 16/2 connection.

omg cobra u have a 159MB/s download speed?  how much do you pay for that internet?

I dont know guys, i have a 12MB/s internet from Time warner but whenever i ran a test on dsl reports or Speedtest.net, i get a result of 3MB/s download, why is that?  My network is not being used by any other device at the time of testing other than my computer.

Regarding me trying to download Itunes from apple.com,  i just tried to download itunes from apple.com at my friend's home and his speed was 1.2mb/s download, at my home it is no more than 300kb/s , why is that?

I said I had 16/2 connection but the test is screwy so I do not use speedtest nor recommend it.

ok, but regarding to my main question, why do i not get fast speeds when i download from firefox? could something be limiting the speed in firefox? i mean this started as soon as i got the DIR655, again, torrents are really fast but i know some websites that always have a very fast download speed, such as microsoft and apple, and like i said when i was at my friend's house today , he has a crappy dlink router, his speed while downloading itunes from APPLE.COM is 1mb/s in firefox, no less. i cant get over 300kb/s when downloading itunes..

Not really sure but you could try these tweaks for FF.

Type about:config in the address bar and hit enter

network.http.max-connections 30 to 96
network.http.max-connections-per-server 15 to 32
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server 6 to 8
network.http.pipelining false to true
network.http.proxy.pipelining false to true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 30 to 8
network.http.pipelining.ssl false to true
network.http.proxy.pipelining false to true
