From what I have read, more and more people are moving away from AVG since the latest version because of problems.

The best free AV at the moment is Avira AntiVir Personal Edition.

if you have adblock plus and subscribe to malware block then delete it. Also I suggest deleting your temp internet files and see if it helps. Also depends on the servers you're downloading from.

i have a mac, im not using a antivirus program, i do have Adblock Plus Addon in firefox to block ads, how could that be slowing my downloads?

Can you try another PC on your network.  Can you try another Browser.  Also try using TCPoptimizer, but I doubt it will do much.
