firme ware question
« on: January 24, 2010, 06:34:56 PM »

I just bought this model today and it had 1.07 version already installed. Do I have to download all the old firmware and install it?

why would you want to download the old firmware? 1.08 beta is current but 1.07 is stable

Just so you know, each successive firmware update contains all previous versions material, so you need just the numerically highest release!!!

Just so you know - you're wrong - there were features in a number of the early firmware versions that were missing from later ones - some have been reintroduced.

Now in many cases, you can simply update from whatever version you're at, to the "numerically highest release", and as far as I know, you can do so with the DNS-323, but you should not assume that this can be done with any device - the important thing to do is to read the release notes that come with the firmware for whatever device you wish to update - you may find that there are particular sequences in which firmware must be updated to avoid bricking the device.

I've seen switches where later firmware versions depended on bootloader code that was only supplied with a specific earlier version of the firmware, and RAID controllers where updates not done sequentially would cause a loss of data.

Whilst the original poster's question may seem naive, it's a perfectly reasonable question.

I think it's unfair to say the poster is "wrong".

Since this is a thread about the DNS-323, I think it's safe to assume we are talking about the DNS-323 and not "other devices".

The advice given that only the latest firmware *needs* to be installed is therefore correct in this instance, regardless of which features such as scandisk were removed in older versions.

Each release is a full release in its own right and can be installed without the need for any previous versions.

The first paragraph - which is the one where I say he's wrong - deals specifically with the DNS-323.

Now if you take the time to read the post, you may notice that I have already dealt with the issue that you are now pointing out, and gone on to suggest, with examples, why this approach should not be a hard & fast rule.

With the DNS-323 firmware upto 1.08, you are free to install any version you choose, but will this still be so with 1.09?

ALWAYS read firmware release notes - you do not know what the firmware author has changed until you do so - updating the firmware without first reviewing the relase notes MAY lead to a bricked device.
