We have looked into satellite broadband but the prices scare the heck out of us. Plus the tiny bandwidth allowances. And if they think you are abusing it, the penalties are enough to upset Congress.
I agree that the prices are pretty ugly.
We use AT&T service for our phones so no EV-DO. I saw the 3G adapter option in firmware v1.15 but when I upgraded to v1.21 it was gone. I did try it though but didn't get anywhere.
I think that it might only show up when there is a EV-DO USB modem installed, as I don't see it being cut from the feature set. I could however be wrong, as I don't personally use the feature.
Is there a way to get the router to connect to an Ad Hoc network? Using that program on my phone turns it into one. I think I can change it into a connection that will feed an access point if the router can become one. I see that there is some conflict as to whether or not the 4500 can be an access point or not.
No, the wireless the router provides is as a host, not a client.
Well, what about getting a MiFi? Or if you want to stick with AT&T, they offer quite a few USB dongles. Plug it into a spare PC, and then share the network out through the Ethernet port.
D-Link has two 3G Mobile Routers into which you slot a 3G card:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=525. The former claims some AT&T support, but it's not clear that it actually is compatible.
Finally, I did get a fair number of hits on this page:
