Life in the woods has me stumped
« on: January 24, 2010, 11:53:34 PM »

I moved to a new place where there is no internet. By that I mean I have no cable/dsl internet. For months my wife and I have to use our Windows Mobile phones to connect our PC's. Using either USB or Bluetooth we use Internet Connection sharing and share it with whatever PC we are using (I have 3-4 plus whatever ones I am repairing or building). I love my dgl-4500 and have missed since I packed it away before moving. I brought it out today in the hope of being able to connect my phone to it somehow and let all the PCs and my Wii connect to the Net. I upgraded my firmware from 1.15 to 1.21. I reset the router and tried using WMWifirouter http://global.wmwifirouter.com/consumer/ to connect. I then tried using the USB port. I got nothing. I have been trying stuff for hours now and looking for help/ideas on the net. Any one ever do this? Or have any ideas? The cable company says they won't come out here, the phone company just leads me on with "we'll look into it". All I have is our 3G AT&T WM6.1 phones. Any help or ideas is appreciated.

Hmm. Okay. If you have a spare PC, you could attach your phone to that, use ICS, and plug from the Ethernet on the PC to the WAN port on the DGL-4500. Actually, I'm not sure ICS will let you do that. Um, if you have a copy of Windows 7, Connectify http://connectify.me/ will let you use a spare PC as a Wifi Hotspot. Not quite what you want. Tricky.

Were you trying to use a EV-DO USB connector? Or is your phone using EV-DO? Taken from the router's help page:

3G USB Adapter
Select 3G USB Adapter to use a 3G adapter to provide access to the Internet using an EV-DO cellular signal. Simply connect a 3G USB adapter to access the Internet (third party EV-DO subscription and available signal required).

Um. If you have enough sky view, you could get Satellite broadband. http://consumer.hughesnet.com/ or http://www.wildblue.com/ are two providers I've looked into in the past. Also, you could mount a dish on a pole if you need to clear some in-the-way treetops...

Hope this helps,
Hank

We have looked into satellite broadband but the prices scare the heck out of us. Plus the tiny bandwidth allowances. And if they think you are abusing it, the penalties are enough to upset Congress.

We use AT&T service for our phones so no EV-DO. I saw the 3G adapter option in firmware v1.15 but when I upgraded to v1.21 it was gone. I did try it though but didn't get anywhere.

Is there a way to get the router to connect to an Ad Hoc network? Using that program on my phone turns it into one. I think I can change it into a connection that will feed an access point if the router can become one. I see that there is some conflict as to whether or not the 4500 can be an access point or not.

I agree that the prices are pretty ugly.

I think that it might only show up when there is a EV-DO USB modem installed, as I don't see it being cut from the feature set. I could however be wrong, as I don't personally use the feature.

No, the wireless the router provides is as a host, not a client.

Well, what about getting a MiFi? Or if you want to stick with AT&T, they offer quite a few USB dongles. Plug it into a spare PC, and then share the network out through the Ethernet port.

D-Link has two 3G Mobile Routers into which you slot a 3G card: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=524 and http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=525. The former claims some AT&T support, but it's not clear that it actually is compatible.

Finally, I did get a fair number of hits on this page: http://www.google.com/products?q=at%26t+mobile+router

Good luck,
Hank

Thank you for the suggestions. I haven't got the cash to grab the 3G routers and pay for the extra plans. I know that limits me, I am just looking at options. I may be moving by the end of the year so I will be back in civilization  and get broadband back.
