How to setup DIR-655 dynamic dns with freedns.afraid.org?
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:18:53 PM »

I would like to ask for advices on how to setup DIR-655 dynamic dns with freedns.afraid.org.

Unlike no-ip or dyndns which use server-login-based (i.e. server+hostname+usernam+password) method; freedns.afraid.org uses a URL-based dynamic dns update method.
 :-\

I tried to use the dynamic dns agent services DNS-o-matic to do the "translation", although DNS-o-matic says it support freedns, it does not work actually, it always failed with an error message.
 >:(

Could the DIR-655 support the URL-based method?
Does freedns also has a server-login-based method?
Besides DNS-o-matic, is there other dynamic dns agent/translation services that I could have a try?
 ???

Please advise, Thank you!
 :)

Hi,

I use openDNS and just listed their IP's in the DNS section of the (Manual) Internet Setups...the router does the rest it seems.

The 655 has a dyndns client built into the firmware that updates the WAN IP to your dyndns account periodically.  I use it on my 655 with great success and do not need to run a client on my PC or visit a website because it is taken care of by the 655.  It is free and you get upto 5 hostnames.  The website is a bit tricky to understand - you configure your hostnames in the 'services' area which is weird and not straight forward.

Dlink also has a dyndns partnership it seems.  I have not used their service but it should work similarily and is also account based and is supported by the 655.  If you want other services, consider a DD-WRT gateway.

Thanks, Sammydad1 and pender.

It is true that the 655 works well with no-ip and dyndns.

Since I have been using freedns for years and is happy about it, I am a bit reluctant to change to other providers.

I may consider to do so, if there is really no other way to integration my 655 with freedns services.

Thank you for the advises.

I am not aware of what services FreeDNS provides, but DynDNS and the DynDNS client WAN IP updater built into most routers works effortlessly.  All the free service of DynDNS provides is updating your WAN IP (or assigning a user set IP) to upto 5 free dyndns hostnames.  Beyond that I do not know what else it does.  If freedns does the same thing, then it should be an easy switch.

Thanks, pender.

I agree DynDNS should be one of the most supported service by most routers out there.

Thanks for the tips on switching the provider. Since I am using my own domain names, DynDNS will need to charge $29.95/year. FreeDNS has the unbeatable price, it is free (with some conditions though), and no limit on the number of sub-domains.

I'm not sure how FreeDNS works, but you can try to assign your FreeDNS domain to your dyndns hostname - kind of like a redirection if FreeDNS supports URL redirection.  That way you can keep your FreeDNS domain but have the DynDNS service take take of your public IP resolution.  That is the best solution for the 655. I believe in FreeDNS you create a new domain using the NameServer option or use the Web Forward Tool.

I know the DD-WRT firmware supports freedns because I have a wireless bridge with that firmware - it needs your FreeDNS username credentials and not the URL you were referring to.  The DD WRT is not acting as a gateway but I can test to see if it still properly updates my WAN IP even though it does not have access to that IP from my modem.  I believe it uses a third party web service like whatismyip to determine that.

K, I just confirmed that DD-WRT works when not acting as a gateway but as a client.  If you have a spare DD-WRT compatible router laying around then go that router if you don't like the dyndns redirection method.

Thanks for the tips, pender.

I will consider the redirection method or an alternative dynamic-dns update "client" if things cannot sort out.

Hi,

Under the Tools setup menu, an item called DYNAMIC DNS allows you to enter DNS information with username etc....  Is this what you are referring to ?  Or maybe it is, but the router locks you into certain providers ?

It looks to me from real quick tetsing, you just type in the particular information about your DNS stuff and also tick the enable check box.... AND it "appears" that should do what you are asking about ???  I do not use this feature so I am not sure if this is what you asked about; but it looks like it might be....

Yes that is correct.  Selects dyndns.com (free) even if you have a dyndns.org hostname.  Under hostname fill in the full yourhostname.dyndns.xxx into that field.  The username and password is so the 655 can update the hostname with the WAN IP.  If you have DSL or an Internet service with a static WAN IP, then there is no need for this.
