Random connection drops (nevermind, ISP found problem finally)
« on: January 27, 2010, 05:20:14 AM »

EDIT: D-Link 4300/4500 were fine all along, ISP finally found the issue.  I guess the CM is more sensitive than the voip modem which is why I could still use voip when network was down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This might look like a cross post, but it is not as I am having the exact same issue with a new 4500 as I did with my 4300

Monday I had Charter give me a new cable modem, Tuesday I replaced my 4300 with a new 4500 and just a few minutes ago I had my first (noticed) connection drop.

I was the only user on the network (wii and iphone might be idle), practically zero load as I was reading a loaded webpage when I saw my IM networks disconnect in Trillian.  Then I tried to load a new webpage and it timed out.

While reading the logs trying to find anything, in about 3-4 minutes the connection restored without me power cycling the modem or router.  This is the log for the 10 minutes prior to me disconnecting.  I replaced my ip address and my company's vpn ip address.  I used to have a vpn device that sat between the cable modem and router but have since removed that to try and diagnose these connection problems

I'm running vA2 Firmware Version :  1.14,  2008/10/16  and after reading this forum a little bit hesitant to upgrade that, plus 2 different cable modems, 2 different routers, same problem.  Do you think the firmware would have any effect on this?

Below is my previous post:

Quote
I am trying to figure out why my DGL4300 keeps dropping my connection randomly.  It can happen when someone is watching youtube, hulu, playing games, etc (other high bandwidth apps) or when I'm the only user on the network and I'm just trying to load google's homepage

I have internet and phone through Charter.  The cable comes out of the wall and is split, 1 goes to the voip modem Arris TM502G and the other goes to the cable modem Ambit C020.  My Dlink serves 3 PCs 1 printer via cat5 and 3 devices over wireless.  (diagram http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8071/networkt.png)

I'm 95% sure the problem is with the Dlink as when I cant reach a webpage or ping something I can pick up the phone and get a dial tone.  Also I have setup my laptop to be connected directly to the cable modem and when I lose connection on my pc, I will quickly plug in my laptop to the port where the router connects to the cable modem and can access the internet fine there.  Plugging back into the router the PCs still cant access the internet until I reboot the router.

The only thing fishy I see in the logs pertains to the Wii's dhcp

Code: [Select]
[INFO] Sat Jan 16 11:30:16 2010 Wireless system with MAC address 00191DE2998E disconnected for reason: Received Deauthentication.
I'm running on Firmware Version : 1.8,    2007/03/01

I have tried updating the firmware listed on the support page, but I get no errors and it always reports version 1.8 after updating

What are some steps I can take in diagnosing the problem?  This just started happening this month, but I have added no new devices to the network or changed their settings.

you've had 2 different cable modems and 2 different routers and this happens across the board on all oh them? Hmm. Sure this is not a ISP issue? I'm on cable and use a Linksys Cable modem to the 4500. My 4500 is set for Auto DHCP on the WAN side, however I have copied the Primary and 2ndary DNS Server IPs and pasted them into the Basic/Internet/Manual settings Primary and 2ndary boxes that were empty. Also check to see if you have Advanced DNS Services enabled. I'm not sure if your version of FW has this option or not. People have been turning this feature off. Its off for me. Also check for DNS Relay. Mine is ON and has been working.

Other than this, you might want to upgrade to 1.15 or 1.16 FW before calling DLink. I recommend not applying the released 1.21NA FW that's on there main web page. The betas are good right now but the released on isn't stable.
Let us know how it goes.

Ya I'm completely baffled, and no I can't rule out the ISP as the issue yet either

When the tech came out I remember him mentioning 2 things he checked in the signal, he told me what their acceptable range is and showed me my numbers were very very good.  I forget what terms he used but he showed me his box that was doing the line test

I never lose (or lost to the 4300) connection to the router, I'm always able to login and check the logs when my internet goes down.  And when I say goes down I mean I cant even ping an ip address like my dns server like I can now.

I had an old cat5 I was using forever between cable modem and router, ditched that and made a new one myself, still happened, now I'm on the dlink supplied one and it still happens

I'll start with 1.15 and go from there, thanks.

Is there any possible interference issues I could be missing.  I have the modem, voip, and router on top of a mac tower (that is in sleep mode 95% of the day, only turn it on when i have to :P) and my pc is a good 5-6 feet away?

You should be using your Mac tower man LOL. No shouldn't be any interference concerns. I have my 4500 sitting on top of my HP 24pt Gb switch along with my cable modem and this is all next to my 23" CRT. And taking the VOIP out of the loop you still have the same problems?
I don't think your cabling is the issue. Ya, it's still good to check. Hmm, I would take everything out between the 4500 and the cable modem, shut off WiFi for now, connect one PC. Check the link settings on the PC's NIC and make sure it's set for Auto or manual 100 or the highest speed it supports. Typically Auto link should be fine.

I would turn off SPI for now as well on the 4500, make sure the 4500 is set up for auto DHCP on the WAN side and Dynamic DNS Services are off. See if you get any farther with this set up.

Let us know. Will try to help you get it going if we can.

I have a clip fan clipped to the upper edge of my desk, blowing air down on my 4500 24/7.

It was getting uncomfortably hot, and would rather keep it cool and alive.

I've heard of folks using laptop coolers as well, but the fan does a good job for now. I noticed the issue with one of my DGL-4300's as well.

Connection drops or Wired or Wireless?

What type on encryption are you using if it is wireless?

What happens if you connect directly to your modem? Do you experience the same thing?

Both wired and wireless drop: http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8071/networkt.png

Wireless uses WPA-Personal

I can always access the web ui on the router, so I'm feeling pretty sure the problem is between router and cable modem.  Trying to ping an outside ip from the router times out yet I can still pick up my voip phone and get a dialtone

I need to set aside a time for me to be the only user on the network and test a direct connection to cable modem.  I haven't had a drop since my last post nor updated firmware yet, so I could be going along for hours on end w/o an issue, it's catching it at that random moment that is hard

If you get sometime, it would be helpful to take out the VOIP and splitter. Run the cable into the cable modem to the 4500 and connect up one PC testing wired and wireless connections. This would help narrow down what might be causing the drops. Yes, to testing a PC directly connected to the cable modem too with out the 4500 in line. Let us know how it goes.

Well thank you for all your posts

After talking with people online, going through 3 routers (4300, 4500, and custom vpn router) I was now more certain it had to be cable.  I went through probably 3 more calls to ISP, and having them send out a tech to the house again, this time they found noise buildup in the line and a Level3 tech logged into the modem and saw it going offline.  They ran a new line to the home and it's been a day and a half with out a drop so far.  I'll continue to monitor but its nice now they finally found the problem.

Just wish they would let me, or at least the guys the send out, have the ability to log into the cable modem and view the logs and my wild goosechase of router/network configs would have been averted.  Or even the first level guys on the phone that I guess never checked the status history maybe?  They kept telling me everything looked fine and to check my network setup. /sigh

Editing first topic, if I can, so people dont think this is a Dlink problem

Yaaaaaay  :D
Good to hear. Seems like there is a certain percentage of ISP issues that always seem to be denied by the ISPs. "You lines are good". Had the same issue with a buddy on mine on DSL late last year. Router kept going off line and getting a new IP address and kicking him off line randomly. Come to find out the DSL lines were not set up and filtered right going into the house and the marketing had given them speeds outside of the limited boundaries from where the switching station to there house. That's marketing for you. Wish ISP would be more pro-active on troubleshooting lines and HW. Glad it's up and running well now.

Cool.. Yeah usually you dont get much help from tier 1 support you need to be persistant with getting pass tier 1.

I've seen a lot of sites going down lately due to bad weather and most cases if you call the carrier you can ask them if they are aware of any area outages and they should be able to start running their line tests or dispatch a tech to your location.
