HD Streaming to Xbox360
« on: January 31, 2010, 12:48:48 PM »

Hi All,

I have a DIR 655 with a DWA 556 desktop adapter on windows 7 64 bit.  I also have an xbox 360 wired to the DIR 655.  I am trying to stream a WMVHD 1080p movie around 8 gb.  When trying to stream to the xbox 360 via windows meida center it plays for about 5 minutes then hangs up and stops playing.  When I use the media center network tuner it shows that the connection is as good as it gets.  My network icon in the tray on my computer also shows that i have 5 bars for my signal.  When I try to play the movie through a shared folder on the xbox 360 it plays but every 10 minutes or so it freezes and displays a loading bar and after a minute continues playing.  Do you have any suggestions on getting HD streaming working flawlessly to an xbox 360 through windows media center?

Thanks,

Hello,

I can't even stream 720p video let alone 1080p over wireless to my xbox 360.

1080p video works great over wired of course.

I have the DWA-552 card using this Antenna:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833996013

All connected via 802.11n to my DIR 655 (Hardware Version: A2 & Firmware Version: 1.33NA) down stairs many rooms over. I'm up stairs on the second floor, many room over.

Even with the antenna above I only get an average Rate of around 80Mbps and Signal of 50%. Ouch!

Way better though when I was using 802.11g with a Linksys router and adapter.

I pick up an additional 5 wireless routers, from neighbors, in my room which are causing interference. Thankfully I'm the only 1 on channel 11.

Anyhow, with streaming 720p video my xbox 360 must load right from the start and then wants to load every 10 seconds or so. Streaming 1080p is impossible then.

However, tonight I just now bought this Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122233

I'm hoping I will have less interference and be able to play at least 720p videos (as that is most of my video), if not 1080p. God I hope I made the right choice. Even if it does not work out I can use them else where in the house.

I will be sure and update this post once I receive my package, standard 3 day delivery so probably will not arrive until Thursday.

Take Care,

Will

Step by Step procedure:

Get in Car

Go to best buy

Purchase any product NON-Dlink

Go home

Install

Enjoy

Issue Resolved..... :)

Well im sure the xbox 360 network adapter is only 100 mb, and some Hd streams push 10-20 MB per second. Plus the speed of the hard drive and computer streaming the file can impact performance.

Complete nonsense.

Sounds like a buffering issue or data priority issue. Using QoS or WiSH? If not, do so.

I made some tweaks to my router configuration.  Changing wireless channel to CH 11.  setting the transmission rate to MCS 15. and the channel width to 40mhz.  I think some of these settings are dangerous with a bunch networks around but there are no networks around me.  I was able to transfer the file another wireless computer at around 30MB/s.  Seems like this should be plenty of bandwidth to stream the HD file to a wired xbox 360....Wheres the bottleneck?  Any ideas.

see just above: buffering, done by the PS3 is quite essential. Is it possible there's other network activity that takes priority over the videostream?

Sweet, I can now watch 720p and 1080p on my xbox in the living room and 720p in my bed room. :)

Almost can do 1080p, has to load for a half second every 30 seconds. Going to play around with a bit this weekend to see if I can get the 30 second lag fixed.

I can now upload at 3.2MB/s to my server where before I was stuck at 1.1MB/s. So three times faster.

I'm very happy with my new Powerline Adapter. I'd highly recommend every check it out.

Yes I know my speeds are slow but that's because of the distance. So in summary my powerline adapter is doing 3 times better than my wireless n adapter with a more powerful antenna.
