Having difficulties connecting my DNS321 over the internet
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:21:13 PM »

I've followed all the directions in setting up my DNS 321 for ftp over the internet.  My friend and I  tried to access my DNS over the internet,  it didn't work.  I've also tried disable the firewall and reseting the DNS321 and the router, but it still didn't work.

My DNS321 is connected to an Airlink101 430 wireless router, and the default port 21 is set for my DNS321.  I have no problems with my IP webcam which is operating on port 80.

An user is assigned under network access and ftp service is enabled in DNS321.

Since this is a ftp server, I need to download a ftp client software in order to access my DNS321?
When I open my IE from a remote location, do I type in my ip address, like 79.150.55.11 or something else?

All help are appreciated!

You use your public IP address to connect from a remote Internet location.  If you want to have a static URL instead of a dynamic IP address, try DynDNS: http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/

Thanks for responding.

I have the dynamic IP address.  I'm trying to make my DNS-321 as private as possible without having to go through any channels.  I thought the DNS-321 already has a ftp server built in.  This is the reason why I bought it, so that I don't need to turn on my computer all the time in order to share my files over the internet.  Is this a router problem or software issue, or configuration issue?

Unresolved question:   When I want to access my DNS321 remotely, do I just type in my public IP address in the web browser's URL, right? (no http:// or ftp, etc.) I've tried all that, but no success.  Also, I've contacted D-link's phone tech support, but I was having a hard time understanding them, due to their accents.   ???

The DNS-321 does indeed have an FTP server, and it also serves as a dynamic DNS client to keep your dynamic DNS account synchronized with your public IP address.

Well, the best way to use FTP is to have an FTP client.  As far as accessing it from IE, you'd type:

ftp://<ip_add>

I have to say I've never successfully connected with the DNS-321 with IE, I use FileZilla or another FTP client to connect.

DynDNS is useful to actually be able to find your dynamic IP address as it changes.

Using another ftp software defeats the purpose of a truly independent net storage server.  My main reason for getting this DNS321 is that it functions without having to leave my computer on in order to share files over the internet (like my IP webcam), thus without need to worry about virus and spy hacking my computers.

While it works good in a home network environment, my DNS drive never automatically connect to Windows Vista Home Premium. I have to manually connect the drive every time when I turn on the computer.   :'(  I am wondering if you've having the same problem?

This is not related to provider (like provider blocking ports) or some firewall in your router ?

The other FTP application I was talking about was the client, not the server.

I've never had an issue with the unit connecting.  I don't map a drive letter to the unit, I just use network paths to access it.  However, I have a drive letter mapped to the DNS-323, and it's always worked just fine.

I have the same problem.
I enter ftp:// and my IP.  I enter user name and password, then all I got is a blank page
Before you ask yes port 21 is open

Are you sure you have the correct IP address?  You do realize it's NOT the 192.168.x.x address, but rather the public IP address, right?  Do you use a service like DynDNS to map a fixed URL to your IP address so you can always connect?

Link does not work, but I think I got it.
I don't need this service because I have static IP (not changing)
But I still have a blank page
