Setting up FTP and email notifications
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:17:45 PM »

Hi everyone,

Have just purchased a DNS-323 and going through the process of setting it all up. There are a couple of things I am having problems with and hoping someone here may be able to help.

1. FTP Server; I have an IP address of 123.243.99.94 (Setup Static IP) & have set up a user with password to have full read/write access to the root folder. When I type in ftp://123.243.99.94 I am prompted to enter a username & password (which I do) but they are not accepted... that is, the same dialog remains. Do I need to try and access this outside of the network? I only tried from home one the same network. I did also try and and access internally with no success.... I assume I am supposed to type ftp://192.168.1.35 (IP of the DNS)?

2. Email notifications. When I put in all my settings, SMTP server, Port, opened SMTP port on router I was not able to generate a test email successfully. Tried with some other accounts too without any luck.

I have firmware 1.07 installed. Thanks in advance.

Have you set up your router to forward port 21? Are you typing in the internet (external/WAN) IP of your router, or the IP of your DNS? You need to forward Port 21 on your router and the ftp to the external address of your router.

For email..I had the same problem. Try to make your "to" and "from" emails be exactly the same. That worked for me for whatever reason. It says you can make the "from" be whatever you want, but that didn't work for me.

Hi. I have the FTP setup on Port 5300 and forwarded this port via my Router. I am typing in the internet IP of my router. I have also tried the IP of my DNS but had less luck with that. I'm hoping it is something obvious I am missing...

I will try the email thing and let you know how I get on.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of the issues with the current firmware the inability to change the port to anything but the default and have it work? I thought I read about something in the 1.08 beta release notes about that being fixed. If you have 1.07, then it wouldn't be fixed and you'll have to use 21.

Thanks for your reply - I was not aware of this and will change back to 21 tonight and see how it goes. I changed initially because when I entered Port 21 a message came up saying (from memory) that it was already used and it would assign Port 2121. Does this make sense to anyone?

Is it worth putting on 1.08? Is this stable enough at the moment?

Thanks again.

The DNS gave you that message, or your router did? If your router did, I would check to see if you have any port forwarding set up. If not...you got me there. As far as 1.08 goes...that is out of my league. You can read about any issues people are having in the beta code section. I'm not having any issues with 1.07, so Im holding off until the official code is released. But that is personal preference. Many, many people are using 1.08 without issues on this forum, so my interpretation is that it is pretty stable.

Sorry - my router was giving me that message. I have Port Forwarding setup - have set up a SMTP port for email notifications (which I have working now - thanks for that) and my BT client. Could this have anything to do with port loop back?

The BT Client may be running on Port 21.

OK... can the BT client be switched to a different port? I assume this will be OK?

This is where I defer to a "higher power." I am not sure there.

Thanks for all your help...

Anyone know if/how I can assign a different port for the BT client?
