New Member is New! -Question...

I have been considering the 4500 but will be completely honest when saying I am more than concerned about the purchase with what I read on the forums here.

Does anyone know what Firmware the units are shipping w/ currently by chance?

Have all these issues w/ lag and constant reboot been rectified? I cannot see dropping $140+ on a router if it does not perform as advertised. I have had a simple 4 port 10/100 (w/ wireless) cheap D-Link model router (I can't rememeber the model # off the top of my head and I am @ work, not home) for a long long time. I only have it cause my someone else bought it for the wireless function. I was a Linksys man prior but I have not had any issues w/ the D-Link.

With that said I am trying to stay loyal in the upgrade process and stay w/ D-Link. I just have become nervous in the thought of making the purchase with all the problems I have read about.

Anyone care to re-assure me or give me some advice/input? Wireless is not used often in my home anymore but every once in a while it is so it's a capability I would like to keep available for if/when it's needed. Otherwise, I considered the 4100.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice I may recieve!

One option you could is ask about the return policy or refund. If you get it home and try it out and it works for you and its at a FW build of your liking, keep it there. My A1 4500 has been working great and is now on the released build of v1.22NA. I Game and internet a lot. No drops or lag accept what comes from the XBL servers and other players.  ::)

Yes there are issues with various units seems like. I do believe there is a global percentage of units that are having issues to the following: Users, configuration and installation, FW and just plain old defective units.

One thing you need to think about is what your network needs are. You really need a router like this for looking and surfing the internet and not use any wireless? Or do you like to game or stream videos or have users with lots of WiFi? Find your balance and buy accordingly. I believe this router will work in most cases however if your not going to use it for it's full potential then you might want to try something different.

My 2 cents.

Let us know what you decide on or any more questions.

I personally would stay away from the DGL-4500 right now. It's seems to be hit and miss on the firmwares and routers. Some people have no problems and others have nothing but problems. Right now I am currently running on firmware 1.15 with hardware version A1 and it seems to have been alright for the last couple of days. If you want to be safe and buy a router that has got nothing but praise and from what I've read is one of the best N routers available, then go with the NetGear RangeMax WNDR3700.

Hmm, let's see.

I game alot actually. Also, I download a ton of stuff. Currently, I don't stream that much but am looking into streaming the yankees game from YES network this baseball season as I am no longer in NY and getting YES Network is just out of the question in the south on a local cable company so alot of streaming (besides the simple YouTube stuff and music streaming I do now) could be coming in the future.

As for wireless, not so much.. However, I want it to be there in the even it is needed as from time to time it is most certainly used. My *main* PC is a self built rig that I have sunk slightly over $3,500 into so far so I am trying to improve it's performance in any way possible as well with this upgrade.

One of my main reasons for upgrading is I am changing all my cabling out to CAT6 and would like to take advantage of it and run Gigabit. Also, several of the reviews I have read have praised the higher end routers for much less latency and even faster downloads etc... I would like to accomplish both of those things if possible.

I Hope that sheds some light on what I am trying to accomplish.

Go with the Netgear WNDR3700 since the DGL-4500 is hit or miss.

I got mine with v1.14 HW A2 and its been flawless no matter what I do.  One thing to keep in mind is people come here to find information when there's a problem, not when it works great (other then the techno geeks), and we have really no idea how many of these have been sold and what percentage don't work well.  They might be 99.9% perfect and 100 out of 100,000 come here and complain about it for instance (I made those numbers up).  The Best Buy and Amazon product feedbacks seem to have plenty of happy customers, but also some with these problems.  But even with those, I think more people post feedback when there is a problem rather than when its all good.

I would check on a stores return policy and refund, if that's an option, I would purchase that 4500 and give it a try, it it works well for you then you'll know, if not, return the unit and get yourself something else. It's worth the try. You can let us know on here if you have any questions or set up concern while the trial period is going on. Let us know what you decide.
