Just bought one of these routers and tried to set it up.  I ran the setup wizard that came on the CD, it prompted me to enter a password and choose some settings.  When I finished, the router was routing Internet traffic but when I went to log on to the router, I couldn't log in using the password I provided.  I eventually figured out that the password was blank.  After logging in to the router, I tried setting up wireless networking.  After going through the settings, I tried to connect wirelessly and failed.  I logged back in to the router and found out that the settings I used had not been saved!  I went through the whole process again, and once again the settings were not saved.

???

Next, I tried a hardware reset, using the button on the back of the router.  Held it for 10 seconds, until the front lights flashed, and then repeated the process to change the password and set up wireless networking.  Same thing.  The settings were not saved.

I did some search on the forums here, and someone mentioned a similar problem.  But, they also said that upgrading the firmware fixed the problem.  The current version is 1.21.  I downloaded version 1.33NA (what does NA stand for, anyway?!) and tried to upgrade.  I logged in to the router and tried to update the firmware.  Everything appeared to finish properly.  However, when I logged back in to the router, the same thing happened -- the firmware was still at version 1.21 and the update had not been saved.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Some folks have reported that you can't update properly if you are using an HTTPS://  vs HTTP://   URL in your browser....  Well maybe I am guessing this may be what you are seeing...

Other thought is that your router is defective.....

I was using HTTP but will try HTTPS tonight, when I get home.   Sounds like a long shot, though.

Update:
There was some other guy who said he first upgraded to firmware version 1.22Beta first, then after that was able to save settings and upload to a later firmware.  I tried that as well, but the router wouldn't update the firmware, regardless of the version.

Before doing anything else, I recommend you power down all computers and devices (network printers, cable or dsl modems, router, switches etc.), then power up cable or dsl modems first, wait several minutes, then power up router, then power up main computer first, navigate your browser to the router, and then try saving new password or other settings.  If there is still a problem after doing that, try a different browser (like if you were using IE, try FireFox.

If your firmware version is 1.21, depending on what you are going to do with the router, I urge you to consider staying at that version.  All the firmware updates since 1.21 have caused a lot of problems for many users.  It has caused me so much trouble that I just went and bought a Linksys router to replace one of my D-Link DIR 655 router.  I am tired of fighting the D-Link router for nearly a year now.  Most of my problems have been regarding VOIP.

Thanks for the reply.  I don't connect the router to the Cable modem when I'm trying to configure it, and I have powered off the router before trying it.  That said, I didn't turn off my laptop, so I'll try that.

I also tried doing the settings updates (e.g. new password) on three different browsers:  IE8, FF and Chrome.  All give the same results.

If the power-on order doesn't help, hopefully I can get my money back.
