DIR-855 - 1.21NA (09/07/16) Issues
« on: February 07, 2010, 12:27:55 PM »

Hello All -

I've been using my DIR-855 for about a year now on my home network.  I bought it to replace a Linksys WRT610 router which I had DD-WRT on.  It rebooted itself way too often so I went to the DIR-855.  I've only had 2 major issues, but other than that it works great.  Below I've listed all the details.  Please let me know any suggestions on how to fix them.

Big Issues:

1) -- Router reboots when under high traffic.
One of the wired LAN clients is a computer that I have hooked up to my TV.  I watch many movies on it and instead of dedicated keyboard/mouse, I VNC into it a lot.  During this, the router often reboots and i loose my wireless connection for about 1 minute.

2) -- One of the 12 things listed in my Virtual Servers list unchecks/disables itself every couple of days.
The port that I use for torrents, 38380, is forwarded in the router in Virtual Servers page.  About twice a week, it unchecks itself and I have to go back in and recheck it.  Using different ports doesn't change anything. I thought it may be a GUI / Interface issue, but i do know that the port is closed when it becomes unchecked after running a few tests.

Current Setup:
- 1.21NA - Dated 2009/07/16
- WAN = Comcast cable modem in the WAN port
- 1 Wired LAN Client
- 5 Wireless Clients - All on the 2.4Ghz Band (Have tried my laptop on 5Ghz, but range isn't as good)
- Running WPA2 Personal
- Router in well ventillated area
- 1 of the "wireless clients" above it a Linksys WRT54GC (i think) router running DDWRT which I have set up to run as a repeater / bridge.  This device has 3 devices connected via wired LAN and communicates with my DIR-855 by wireless.  The signal between them is great as they are only about 25 feet apart. NOTE:  One of these devices hardwired to this repeater/bridge uses 90% of my total internet traffic which is a lot! :o

I'm sure many may ask why I have the repeater / bridge, but the only coax that I can use for my cable modem is in another room and the most of the devices behind my TV (where the repeater / bridge is) don't have wireless so this was my best option for now.

Please ask if you'd like for me to attach or upload any information that you think may help.

Any suggestions for fixes would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

EDIT:
5 Minutes after posting this, the router rebooted again.  Here's the log file from my DIR-855 when it happened.   I believe that it happened at the time stamp of 14:36:47.

Thanks

Update to the latest 1.22NA , reset the router to factory defaults and configure it manually.
Do not use your old settings file.

Thank you for your reply.  I did try that before with no luck.  I just edited my original post and appended a log file.  Hopefully seeing that will help out.  Thanks again...

Whoops:  Just saw that you said 1.22 after I hit "post" - sorry.  Where do I download 1.22 and does it have a release notes or log so that I may see what's changed?

I was running with the factory firmware just fine for months. I upgraded to 1.21NA, and found that the DIR-855 would crash every 1-2 days. I just upgraded to 1.22NA, so we'll see what happens. If it still crashes, Ill update again with logs.

Have you noticed any crashes or problems with 1.22NA? I had terrible time with 1.21NA SW, had to cold reboot the box every 5-6 days... WAN traffic started to not not route, control panel web page gave only "connection reset". I almost searched for a programmable timer to wall outlet to cycle the power every 4 days.

Uptime with 1.22NA is now 4 days, no problems so far. Actually the whole router seems to work a lot better. Will update here if I continue to see crashes...

Well, we shouldn't complain too much. According to Ubicom these products are the most robust and highest performance on the market. Maybe the reality is something different?

The performance is excellent. I've got a 100Mbps cable connection to my home and DIR-855 can route easily the speed, if it only stays up and won't crash all the time.

With 1.22NA software my box has been up for 15 days now, looks good.

But again, what do you do with high-performance stuff if it doesn't work? Same applies to cars as well as computers and network equipment. I truly hope D-Link has fixed the crashing issue now. At least this looks good.

Try to run a torrent...I also hoped this would FW would be fine. It is as long as you don't use it extensively.
