Setting the 655 to function as a "switch" ????
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:44:08 AM »

First let me apologize that I may not have all my network terms down properly, but I believe what I'm after is to get my DIR-655 to ONLY function as a "switch" in my home network.  Here's the scoop.

Currently I run my 655 behind my ISP's DSL service.  The 655 is plugged via it's "Internet port" to the ISP's DSL modem via a Cat5 cable.  Hard-wired with Cat5 cable and hung off the "LAN" ports on the 655 are two desktop units and a NAS DNS-323 (hung off the DNS-323 is a USB printer).  And of course, there are about 3 laptop units which  access the Internet via the 655's wireless capability.

My local ISP is upgrading its service to provide HD TV to our home.  They will be replacing their DSL box and one of the units they are putting in is also a wireless router.  Due to requirements for servicing their preference is for me to switch to their wireless router.  This supercedes my need to run the 655 as a wireless access point.  However, because of the physical location and existing cabling in support of the NAS DNS-323 and it's USB-connected printer I want to keep those units plugged in where they are.  I "think" I need essentially a network switch to sit in the spot that my 655 occupies.  Do I have to replace the 655 or can I get it to function as "just a switch"?????

If more technical details are required, I can provide.  I can provide details about the home setup, I'd have to ask more about my ISP's to be provided h/w.

Thanks in advance.

If I understand correctly you will not use the wirless feature?

You can put the DIR in a kind of switch mode by turning off DHCP and let the new device act as DHCP server. Also there's a hidden 'bridge' mode, which does virtually the same, along with closing all the gateway services you don't need with a bridge. You can search the forum for this feature and how to enable it.

If you want a pure switch.
Turn off: DHCP-server, Upnp, Multicast and LAN-cabel --  LAN to LAN
If you need wi-fi you can use it as usual

Open the dir-655 setup page inside firefox then click view then page style then click no style, now bridge mode should be visible under Network settings. This will take care of turning everything off and also you can use the wan port now as the upstream port to connect to the lan side of the upstream router. By doing this you gain an extra port. ;D

Limitations: NTP will not work correctly, I've experienced some connection issues with my NAS and the switch placed between the NAS and the DIR.

Ntp works fine for me. I also have NAS and have had zero problems.

Yes, NTP and most other work fine here.
Only problem was using QoS because it also slowed down internal connections.

But this was with an older firmware. Did not try QoS with the recent version anymore.

Sell your router and buy a small (4 or 5 ports) gigabit switch.

If you sell it for a good price, you'll even have money to spare afterwards :)

Regards.
