Cannot play Music, Video with WM player using mapped drive.
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:49:48 AM »

Hi, this is my first post.
Just bought DNS-323, setup and everything went smoothly except one problem:

If I try to open an mp3 file or an avi file using a mapped network drive(Z:), windows will display an error that it cannot find the file ....
But if I open volume_1 directly from the network icon, everything works almost instantly.

Anybody experiencing the same problem ??? Please advise.

BTW, the firmware version is 1.07.

Is the media folder on the NAS group and password protected?

I am sorry I don't understand your question. What do you mean Is the folder on the NAS group ? How do I set it ?. Here is a little more info on how I set it up:

To set up FTP, I created 2 users, 1 is "guest" in a group "public" with a password, the other is myself in a group "Private" with a password. "Private" has full R/W permission, "Public" has R permission when accessing the DNS-323 from the Internet and required a password to access it.

Locally, it is part of my LAN and I can read/write like any other hard disk without any password.

Ya, sorry about that.... my question was confusing but you have answered it.  So you can browse your folders with no problem but cannot play the files correct?  Try remapping the drive.  Also, do you have UPnP server activated on the NAS?  If so, can you find your media and play it using UPnP?

Well actually... with WMP12 (Windows 7 64 bit) theres seams to be an issue when we try to play media using uPnP.... WMP does not work... the DNS-323 does show up, but theres an error when we try to see whats in that library

Did you mapped any drive? or are accessing the data directly by browsing your Netowrk?
I'm asking because playing the content via a mapped drive works fine for me

Well, I think there's something is not right with WMP12. I downloaded The KMPlayer 2.9.4.1435 from CNET, it is a freeware and you dont need to install any codecs, it plays all the video formats avi, quicktime, flv, mkv, mov etc.. and audio seems to be much better than wmp12 and have all kind of options that you can set and to my surprise it plays flawlessly thru the mapped drive.

As stated before, WMP12 will play Video & Audio when I created a shortcut of the folders thru the network or if I use FTP to open these folders then use open with WMP.

Yes, I do have UPnP activated but it does not seem to help at all.

and yes I dont remember how many times that I tried to re-map the drive, still no go.

@Buhric: My OS is Win 7 x64 Ultimate so I am not sure if you have the same since you said you did not have any problem playing the content via a mapped drive. and additionally, I also tried to open some .pps files (Power point), It took about 15 seconds to open it via a mapped drive.

ya I also have Win 7 64 bit... but its not the retail version... its still the RC1.. build 7100
and I only have AVIs and MP3s on the DNS-323, both types play flawlessly through a mapped drive

can't say if theres any issues with PPSs or DOCs... never tried them

Well, I also tried with my laptop running win7 Ultimate x86 and got the same result.

Any chance that my HD is not supported ? I am using a single 150Gb WD Raptor.

If I understand your problem correclty,
When you try to open files from the DNS-323 using a mapped drive its so slow that it actually timesout
But when you open a file via the "Network" or FTP it works fine....

Strange problem....

PS
Dunno if Raptors are supported or not... but I beleive its a waste af really good hard drive,
having it installed in the DNS-323.

Yes, That's exactly the problem. It's not timeout but WMPlayer pop up a message saying that it does not find the file when I play AVI or MP3 with WM Player, with KM Player they will open fine, with Power Point file It'll take about 15' to open.

The Raptor is only in there temporarily because I dont have an extra HD to play with so today I went to Fry's and bought a 2TB drive on sale for $139. I dont plan to put this drive in the DNS-323 but use it locally in my PC, I'll move all the data from my 2HD's 500GB each then stick them in to the DNS-323, I'll find out if it does the same thing with new HD's in it.
