unable to open folder
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:46:35 PM »

I changed the user access for my PC's and WDTV Live devices and now i cannot open my "movies" folder, but allother folders work. So i deleted all user account info and created the default checked off "all accounts" and selected Volume_1 . restarted device but i cannot open "Movies" folder, all other folders work fine.. What is going on? ???

*********Update************

I ended up doing a factory reset and then reconfigured the DNS-323 and gained access back to all my folders.

Another question before I screw this up again
I am trying to have 1 group and 3 users as follows;
Group - for my 3 WDTV Live units to have read only access and only be able to view "Movies" "Photos" "Music" "Home Videos" folders

User- Laptop - read/write access to some folders but not all
User- Main PC - read/write access to whole drive
Kids PC - read access to some folders only

I am having a hell of a time setting this up. As stated above, I tried it earlier today and lost access to 1 folder (I don;t understand why) but a factory reset fixed that.
Now (and all the info below is examples only)
my "Main PC" windows 7 account is USERNAME: perfectdark  PASSWORD: 123456
this is the account i use to logon to my Main PC in windows 7. As far as i understand i should be able to go to "Advanced" and then "User/Groups" in the DNS-323 and create a user with the same username and password. Then go to Network Access and select that user and browse to "Volume_1" which would be access to the whole drive. Then select read/write and click save. I then see the access at the bottom of the page.
I go to my computer and map a network drive but it doesn't allow me to connect. And if i try changing the credentials to the same username/password, it still doesn't allowme to open the drive

what am i doing wrong?

Do you, by any chance, are trying to Map directly to a shared Folder?

If so, try to map directly to \\DNSIp\Volume_1
And if the user you created in the DNS-323 has the same ID and Pssword has your Windows user that is currently logged in... It should not even prompt you for credentail.

The thing is, even if the user has access to Volume_1, which is the complete hard drvie and all its folders... it does NOT have direct access to the folders.... Don't ask me why...

But you should be able to access everything if you start to browse (map to) the Volume_1 "share"

thats justit,i tried this but when i map it , i get access denied, you do not have permission please contact your administrator... its like the login is incorrect, but i have tried numerous times, creating the user and password to match my windows account and nothing is working.
not toomentionmy wdtv_live boxes end up with "no media" and cannot see anything

What happens if you give Volume_1 access to "All Accounts" ?

There's also an other user in the forums that had a similar issue... but in is case the Windows and DNS-323 had the same username... but a different password... which was causing the issue....

Could your password be the same, but with different CaSe?
Try changing both the passwords... Windows and DNS-323...
Or try changing user and Password in DNS-323, to make it different than your windows... just to see what happens.

You do realize that you can't have passworded shared and anonymous shares coexist with the current firmware, right?  That was broken around 1.06 or 1.07 and is still broken.

the password + anonymous shares issue was not present v1.06... don't know about 1.07... but It definitely there in v1.08b8
This only affect "unknown" users to the DNS-323 that are trying to access anonymous shares

But I don't think this is the case here.. since perfectdark is trying to map to a passworded share thats using the same username/password as his windows account....

Another issue is that you can't use user names with an embedded space... :)

First, the issue is restored not fixed. I did a factory reset and was able to access all folders. but as soon as i setup user accounts my desktop couldnt access certain folders and my WDTV Live couldnot access folders at all weird.

I did not have anonymous and user accounts active at the same time

I'll screw around with this at a later date, but i am fairly disappointed with Dlink's 1st, 2nd level technicial support. 1st level and 2nd level kept asking me the same questions
1) copy the folder (that i can't access) to a spare hard drive ortoyour desktop ... = how can you copy a folder you cant access???
2) Try renaming the folder = how can you rename a folder you cant access

very bad technicial support on this experience   :'(

You could install fun_plug and telnet into the box to fix the file permissions.  It's a kludge, but others have done it that way.

@perfectdark

I'm starting to wonder is its also a case of Master Browser issue that you are having...
Try the following in order
1. Turn off all computers and network devices.. including router and switches. (WDTVLive need the power unplugged)
2. Turn on your "main" computer"... wait till its in windows
3. Turn on the network device that is attached to your "main" computer, ie. router or switch, wait until all up
4. continue starting the devices up until you reach the "Main" router (the one doing the gateway between the Internet and you local network)
5. turn on all other devices one by one

PS
Make sure that all computer and devices are in the same "Workgroup" before shutting it down
