Shareport success thru Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010
« on: February 10, 2010, 03:19:57 AM »

Hi,

I think I have found the correct settings in TMISP 2010 to allow Shareport to do its thing.    Shareport firmware on my DIR-655 is 1.33NA,  2010/01/19.   Tried this update after not being able to make a Shareport connection to my Lexmark 5250 all-in-one printer from either my XP Home laptop or desktop.   After the update, still had the connection problem with both machines.   After test disabling the personal firewall control in TM, I was able to connect and print.   This indicated that the solution might be in the TM settings, so I began checking into this.   I checked the Shareport manual troubleshooting section:

"Security software such as firewalls, etc. may be interrupting communication between your PC and the router.   Shareport Utility needs to be added to the exception list of your security software. Please refer to the security software documentation for help on adding an application to your exception list. You may also need to open TCP and UDP port 19540 in your security software."

Made two changes to TM setup.   1.  First, opened TM personal Firewall Controls-Settings-Advanced Settings-Program Control, and added a new entry (I called Shareport), allowing C:\Program Files\D-Link\Shareport Utility\Connect.exe (browse to your computer's connect.exe location) through the firewall.   Tried Shareport again with no success.

2.   Then opened TM personal Firewall Controls-Settings-Advanced Settings-Network Protocol Control, and added an entry to comply with the second manual suggestion (allowing incoming traffic only) for port 19540.    This time, I was able to connect and print through Shareport.   I made Shareport auto-connect for printing only.

This setup has worked without issue for the past 5 days.   So far, so good…

UPDATE:

Since my original post of Feb 10, I have had no problems printing from either of my machines (laptop on wireless, desktop on wired connection) .   Believe that many reported problems are tied to security software like Trend Micro, Symantec, etc. blocking port 19540 and/or not allowing connect.exe through the security firewall.   Counting the 5 days before I posted, that makes 15 consecutive days with no printing problems.   Will not post again unless the connection fails.

Peace,
Ken
