Loses DNS and crashes regularly with 1.22NA
« on: February 13, 2010, 09:00:53 AM »

I had been running the factory firmware for months without any problems. I then upgraded to 122NA, and now I have to reset once every 1-2 days. This is really bad for such an expensive router, especially since we can't go back to the original firmware anymore.

There seem to be two types of problems. First, it seems like the router software actually crashes -- it is completely unresponsive via the web interface, and the navigation screen on the physical device went through a few screens and then froze. I power cycled the router to bring it back.

The second problem happened this morning -- all of a sudden no device on the network could resolve DNS. I tried from  tools->system check in the web interface, and the router couldn't do a dns lookup for google. I released the DHCP lease and renewed it via the web interface, and this fixed the problem --- but it should never have stopped working in the first place.

I'm in Long Island NY, and Its ok to send an engineer if you want to debug. Again, the whole reason I bought a $250 router was so I wouldn't have to deal with these kinds of issues.  :(

I agree with the reason you bought your router.  I did the same.  I am willing to pay a premium for something that will work well and without issue.

I was also experiencing issues with my router for a long period of time.  It would either reset periodically or wireless (and sometimes wired) would just stop working until I rebooted the device.  This had me looking elsewhere for something better.

I installed the 1.22NA, 2010/01/21  firmware a few weeks ago and surprisingly, haven't had any issues since.  I don't know what was changed to cause the router to be unstable to begin with or what changed to fix the issues.  But, in my case, it appears to be fixed.....for now.  As of this writing, the uptime has been: 16 Days 7 Hours 50 Mins.  I hope it continues.

This is not to say that I have regained my full confidence in d-link with their firmware revisions; because, I haven't.  I just hope they continue to work on issues, like yours, and learn from their mistakes.

Good luck!

I am having the same problem.  I just switched to opendns.com to see if that solves the problem.  I will let you know if this fixes it temporarly but this is definitely a bug in this version of the firmware update.

I can confirm on DIR-855 Firmware Version: 1.22NA Hardware Version: A2
ISP: Comcast High-Speed Internet S. FL.

Router randomly locks up. LAN works, WAN does not. DNS changes to 0.0.0.0. I read in another topic (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=8857.0) that disabling DNS relay may help. Gonna give it and turning off advanced routing a try.

I'm a new owner. Running 1.22NA - DNS entries go to 0.0.0.0 every 24-48 hours. Have to get on web interface and release/renew IP.

My checkbox for DNS relay is checked and can't be changed. Can DNS relay be shut off in 1.22NA?

Is there any fix other than "use opendns.com" -- which is hardly a fix at all ? What is "Advanced DNS: Enabled" listed in status under the IPs? Is the only workaround to set fixed IPs on each client PC and fixed DNS addresses so they don't go through the router's DNS?

Is there any way to set a fixed two DNS servers on the router so it doesn't drop them?

And no word at all from D-Link?? Has anyone called their tech support lines to complain? Completely unacceptable that in 2 months since release there's no word from them that I can find that it's being addressed/fixed or proper workarounds.

Same issue here. Sometimes drops DNS more than 1 time per day. Seems to only happen when I am actively surfing the web. I just tried to manually set the DNS entries. Hopefully that helps.

if you go into the config of your PC and set static DNS servers instead of getting them from DHCP, you'll avoid dropouts. However, devices like the Wii, cellphones, PS3, Networked-media-tank, TVs with net access, etc can't be fixed as easily. In addition, any time someone comes over and tries to use my network it mandates resetting the router so it can send proper DNS servers to the DHCP clients.

Seems like a total failure on D-Link's part. Months with a severe, product-breaking bug without any comment or try at addressing it is totally pathetic.
