Random Routers Showing Up On Network In Win7
« on: February 15, 2010, 10:22:47 AM »

This may be a Win7-specific issue, but i'm noticing in my network neighborhood that there are a few other routers showing up on my network, none of which are mine. The number of random routers showing up vary from day to day, anywhere from 1-3. Today there is one, it's:

DX-WEGRTR
Serial Number: 20814DXER04729
Mac Address: 00:1c-df:4f:59:54
Unique Identifier: e7fe1b91-8cd5-0310-98dd-001cdf4f5954
IP Address: Unavailable

My wireless settings in the DIR-655 are set up fairly strictly; i'm using 802.11g/n only, WPA2 AES encryption only. I'm not using MAC address filtering, but that seems to be the next logical, albeit annoying, step. These devices also aren't showing up as connected when I check the router status in the built-in firmware.

Is it possible that Win7 is misinterpreting other devices for routers, or is someone roguely connected to my network?

Forget the first possibility.

You are just seeing to your neighbours' access points.  ;D

Got it... so i'm assuming that, since cable internet operates with multiple subscribers on one loop, those other subscribers are showing up? Should I have any security concerns (i.e. should I be doing anything differently) regarding how my router is configured?

No, it could be anyone in your neighborhood whatever connection type they have.

I see a lot of other networks in my area but none can connect to me as they do not know my security key.

That's definitely already enabled (WPA2-only AES encryption).
I think i'll probably just end up adding MAC authentication for good measure.

Thanks all!

even the wifi on my cell fone shows several different access points in my local area....by that I mean within, say, 75 feet of my home,....or however far the fone's wifi can pick up....
