1.33NA dropping connection to cable modem
« on: February 16, 2010, 06:14:58 AM »

I recently updated to 1.33NA.
IT seemd to have been running greate for about 4-5 days.
Last night I could not connect to the internet.

1. Rebooted laptop, nuthin'.
2. Powered down DIR-655, powered up, nuthin'.
3. Finally, powered down cable modem, powered up, interent available.

Does this happen to anyone else?
Does this sound like a cable modem problem? (Never had this problem with my LinkSys, same modem)

Let me know. Thanks.

Roughly same thing happened here over last weekend.

One difference - I also use cable for phone. In fact, I was just calling when both internet and phone died. TV was ok. After a few minutes the phone line restored, but by then I figured it must be a cable problem.

I called cable provider. The guy couldn't find the problem remotely, so we arranged for a technician to visit. Quite a hassle.

Few minutes later, internet came back on. I called again to cancel the technicians appointment. I was told this happens sometimes. It had never happened before (not since I got the DIR655 anyway) and it hasn't happened since  ::).

I will probably just swap out the cable modem, since it is the easiest.

But I think the DIR-655 is somehow messing up the Ethernet port on the cable modem, making it not work.

Dunno, just my 2 cents.

can happen, be sure to try setting the DIR WAn connection to auto 10/100/1000 or specifically to 100

My cable modem,  Motorola SB6120 has a Gb port going into the DIR....so setting it to 100 rather than auto might not be quite right....

Granted at maybe 10 Mbps out of the cable modem (if I'm lucky) 1000 Mb is quite a lot of overkill, but it does give me a Blue LED instead of green LED glow on my cable modem.

It was set to Auto. I set it to 100 Mps.

We'll give this go for a while. Thanks.

Update.

I had to set it back to Auto, setting it to 100/1000 Mps would give me an intermittent wireless connection. This REALLY slowed down my wireless because it looks liked it kept dropping out. I use a sidebar gadget to graph the connection. When I use auto, it is relatively smooth when downloading. When I set it to forced 100 or 1000 Mps, graph is VERY jagged, like a sawtooth. I never looked at the wired machines to see how they were affected since I download mostly off my laptop.

Well the router just locked up again, this morning. It was working fine last night and all day yesterday.
No communication between machines and no internet.
Powered down DIR-655 and the cable modem, powered up. Everything works fine now.

Well, at least it lasted longer this time (over a month).

I guess I'll try swappin' out the cable modem now.

I have the same problem. Im on Comcast with a Motorola SB5101 with the 655 and I constantly have to reset my router because it keeps dropping the conncetion. I always troublshoot my connection with Win7, and it always comes back as a DNS error, and rebooting the router works. Ever since I updated awhile back, its been like this.

Dont bother swapping the modem, because it wont work. I have tried it.
