DIR-655 - 50% LOSS IN NETWORK SPEED!
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:42:57 AM »

Ok, here are the facts:

With my DIR-655 attached I get 8 mbps download on speedtest.net.
Without my DIR-655 attached I get 16 mbps download.  What's up with that?

That is very unusual to see that....  I get zero difference here between direct to modem and using the router....

Do you have QoS set up on the router ?  if so, disable it and try again....

Also, don't use a single test as your guide....even moments apart you can get varied readings....use an average...just my opin... 8-)

Are you running a Gb ethernet port on the pc ?  What modem are you using ? What is the router's WAN port speed set to ?  Typically use AUTO....

On speedtest.net make sure you are seeing the same IP for the tests....I had an instance where using direct to modem, it would report one IP address....and SOMEHOW, as yet unexplained, when using the DIR, it would grab a totally different IP from comcast....

I have the same problem.  I get 11.5 mbps hardwired to the router and only 5 mbps via wireless N connection.

I found that if I set my router to use G and B or anything without N, I am able to get the 11.5 mbps.

I'm on the current firmware and haven't made too many changes from the default settings.

I just bought this router last night and found I had terrible network speeds (wired). I disconnected the router & connected my PC directly to my cable modem and got a 400%-500% speed increase! I plugged back into the router and played with some settings and found that if I disabled QOS/packet shaping, I got the full speed.

The QoS was part of the reason I bought this particular router (to improve Vonage voip) but it definitely did not work well out of the box..

Yup, the switch in the 655 ain't gonna set any speed records, that's for sure.  My fix was to pick up a couple D-Link DGS-1005D 5 port switches (WICKED FAST little switch).

Because my isp gave me a router I connected the switch to that and then one cable to the Lan side of the 655 (NOT the WAN side) s it acts like a wireless AP.  (Someone else on this forum could do that and then they could stop whining about firmware and Securespot)

In your case you could probably pick up the switch and a reasonable wired router for under $50.

Wired is fast, wireless is fast - fast enough to run both my network- 3 pc's, two wireless audio streaming devices, a video streaming device, two dns323's and my IPTV through with NO problems and NO bottlenecks.

Same here.  Wireless goes btwn 0.05-2.0mbs.  wired is 13mbs.   Ready to ditch the router.  Nothing but issues.  Reset the router brings the DL speed to 13mbs then slowly it goes back to a trickle until I reset it again.

What gives?  I want my money back on this thing...

Having network lag on (Wired) , i have max out the 4 ports wired already and notice a degradation on the network speed. also having 2 laptops wireless. Going to get a dlink 8 port switch to relieve the 655 of the switching job. Hope it works better for me
