Unable to setup up FTP properly for external access
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:42:55 PM »

Hi,

I have an issue with the DNS323. While I am able to setup FTP successfully for local access within my network, I am unable to access it from external locations over the Internet. I have tried setting static IP and port forwarding to 21, but to no avail. I used an online tool to check whether the port is open but the results are not successful either. I have used ddnsdlink as well.

Can any of the veterans here please help me :-). I am currently using a wired connection to an Aztech DSL1000ER ADSL2/2+ Ethernet Modem & Router.

Thanks a million

Once you have the DNS-323 setup & working for local ftp access, there are two additional steps required for internet ftp access - to "define" the paths through which it reaches the internet - inbound is the port forwarding which you have already done, outbound is the "gateway" setting in the LAN setup, so lets start by verifying that you have an entry there.

Is your ddnsdlink updating correctly?  Are you using this service with the DNS-323 or with your router (if available)?

I personally use dyndns.org and I have it updated using my router - not the DNS-323.

Have you tried getting your external IP (whatsmyip) and using that as the host to see if you can access the FTP site?

You also should not by testing from within the same network that the ftp server is on - this requires that your router support "loopback" which is just one more variable to cloud the troubleshooting.

I have the same problem. I use a Linksys and configured everything that I could Imagine. When I try to access from outside I receive the auth request, but after typing the username and password it does not answer anything.

I could find out that the DNS-323 is requesting FTP PASSIVE MODE, I believe I can make it happen using ACTIVE MODE. Does anyone knows how to make it Active?

Tks!

The DNS-323 never requests passive mode - that comes from the ftp client you are using - so that's where you have to make the change.
