DI-624 and Vista
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:00:57 AM »

(Didn't see an area for the DI-624 so put it here - if there is a more appropriate spot please let me know).

Have a desktop PC with XP Pro connected via ethernet to my DI-624 (D-Link AirPlus XTREME G DI-624) and works fine. Also have a Dell laptop with XP that connects to same router via wireless and it works fine. (Using WPA in the wireless security.)
BUT I have a friend with a Lenova Y530 laptop with Vista 64 bit and when I try to connect to the same DI-624 it gives problems. First I can get the settings into the Lenova and it will try to connect to the wireless router but after a few seconds it will disconnect and try all over again. In addition to that it seems to stop the DI-624 itself and the connection in the desktop will stop. Also tried the ethernet plugging with the Lenovo to the router and same thing!
In addtion the Lenova has worked fine with a public wireless connection.
What gives?
Please help - nearing the "driving me nuts" category.

Oh!  This is incredible!  I've been having this exact problem for several years now--we just moved, which is why it's coming up again.  In my case, it's a Dell with XP and a Lenovo Y430 with Vista 32 bit.  But this is exactly what happens: trying to connect the Vista machine to the router, either via wireless or via ethernet cable, causes the router to completely reset.  (As in, it even resets the router's system time back to "April 1 2002".)  But the XP machine works fine; and the Vista machine works on other networks without a problem.

I have no idea what the solution is.  A great deal of websearching suggests that the right thing to do is downgrade the firmware (see for instance Tony Linguini's response at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/wsk/thread/1064e397-9d9b-4ae2-bc8e-c8798e591915, in which he says that with a DLink DI624 rev C (which is exactly what I have), he downgraded the firmware to 2.42).  But I can't find an older version of the firmware anywhere.  Is it available?  Is there another solution?

It seems that the WPA (and WPA2 especially) implementation is differently handled by different vendors. Some vendors do seem to have the same setup, but you cannot assume anything.
There are quite a few threads in this forum on problems trying to get a WPA[2] connection set up correctly.

Mostly the advise is to keep all hardware the same brand/vendor to circumvent this issue, or lower to WEP, as that standard is much more smoothly implemented. I personally would not like to go lower than WPA2, but in some cases you might need to.

Downgrading firmware is not really the solution, but in some cases it could help. You might need to read the reason (release-notes) of the firmware-upgrade, and I cannot help you on the location for older firmware. Could you contact the author and let him supply you with the (location of) the firmware?
