Want to boost performance and keep it steady

I have the DIR-655 router. Now I don't have the latest firmware but did just download it but I'm on a wireless computer and the wired one isn't available at the moment. I will be updating it tomorrow. So far I've read the FAQ's and stickies as far as setting everything up to get 300mbs and that's not the issue here. The problem is that it doesn't hold 300 the entire time. It will jump from 120 to 300 and everywhere in between. I'm about 2 or 3 bedrooms away so I don't believe I should be having this. Again I'm really not sure whats going on. If you can suggest some ways to fix this or speed it up that would be great. Anything to try I'll do or settings I should change just let me know. So far I have it set up in mixed mode for b, g, n; also its 20/40 auto, and set to auto for transmission rate. My wireless card is as it comes out of the box. Just installed drivers and was done.

No one? Ok well I was reading around and do you think that changing the frequency from 2.4 to 5.0 might help? Maybe I'm getting interference from something but can't see it.

I have nothing else on my wireless other than router to laptop.

While downloading something, I get above 200 Mps, but it does vary from 200-300Mps. I see this as normal.

I do have 2 other routers in the area, but I don't think they are bothing me.

Do you have a 2.4 GHz phone? Try unplugging it. Turn the microwave off (I heard about this one).
Try line of site with the router.

the dir-655 can't do 5ghz. but you can install inSSIDer and check the signal strength on different channels on your router and move your antennas around till you get the best signal.

Yeah I like inSSIDer for that also.

I forgot to mention, if I'm not actively using the wireless connection, it will drop down to around 150Mps.

Ok I'll have to try that program and see what channel works best. Now when I do say find a channel that works best and set it to use that channel on the router do I then have to change anything on my computer to reflect that? Also I bought this antenna (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833998052) that sits up on my desk on the wall. I will try to see what I can do as far as the connection. I guess I can understand that it might back down the connection speed if it doesn't need it.......not that I like it but I can see doing it.
