DWA 130 USB Adapter - Connection problem
« on: February 26, 2010, 09:14:15 PM »

Hello, I'm Davin from Long Beach, CA. Birthday October 7th, 1988

Yes, I was wondering if anyone could help me resolve some issues I have with the DWA 130 USB Adapter.

The good news is that I can see wireless availability to choose from, e.g. the library has free wifi; and I could see the name of the wifi connection on my laptop. By the way, I have an A30 IBM Thinkpad, XP SP3, 256Mb ram, etc. But see that's the problem, I cannot connect to it.

First of all, my IBM laptop already has a built in minipci/infrared port for wireless connection. So, I do not know if enabling both on at the same time, the dlink and the built in wireless would be a problem.

Moreover, I bought this DWA 130 USB Adapter because I wanted to reach an area further in distance in wireless signal. Even if I could get FREE wifi connection, I still have a problem connecting to it, like when I was at a local library with free wifi pass, or Starbucks, etc. SO, if you didn't catch that,  ;), I can double click or connect to a wireless name or choosing from the wireless LIST, it'll show up that it's connecting, but it'll take just a tad long, and that when it's finished TRYING TO CONNECT, the TRYING TO CONNECT fails, and it fails all the time so far.

I'm not sure if it's the product in itself which would conflict with the built in wifi, or, something, like I have two antivirus program running in secret at the same time, and I have my fire wall turned off. Friends say that the fire wall turned on would be a problem, or that and the two antivirus program...

If it's a driver's update thing, I've tried long and hard to look for a driver's update, but most of the websites are untrusted or invalid...

If you can help, thanks for helping. Like seriously, I'm about ready to return the product.  :-\

I have the same problem with dwa 125 and I had the same problem with dwa 510 which I've just returned to the shop.
I've spent couple of days trying to install the dwa 510 and thought the problem was with the driver because it was for vista and I'm using win 7.
So I returned it and got dwa 125. I've spent a day trying to figure the problem out, installed latest drivers and finally fond the solution: turn off the firewall on protocol level.
I'm using eset nod but I also heard people have problems with drivers/utility while using Kaspersky.
Going to return this one tomorrow also, because using internet without firewall is unacceptable to me.
If it's ok for you - just disable the firewall completely (go to adapter settings and uncheck the protocols that correspond to firewall).

Regards, Igor.

Hmm, I've found the solution, a friend at Office Depot helped me with my IBM Thinkpad A30 computer, even though it's an old computer, he still managed to help. HE said that there's nothing wrong with the usb and software in itself. The problem is connecting to someone else's wifi, I somehow may not be able to connect to their router since perhaps others are trying to do the same, like at starbucks, or the library, etc. And it's some other issue with the router too, I'm not really too sure. But if anything, let me know what you know, please, because I think the solution is keeping my adapter, and buy an antenna so I could get longer range from my home to some other place.

Funny, because my friend Brian at office depot said that there are antenna that can reach from Long Beach to the LA convention and somehow get connection. But in any case, if you have any thoughts on this please. I think the ipconfig /all, is probably too personal?

I'm kinda not aware of CA's places, so it's hard for me to realize the distance.
Anyway, in 20 minutes after writing the previous post i found the problem and also solution.
In my case problem was in conflict with anti-virus/firewall software.
I've discovered this when tried turning off unused protocols from dlink's connection. (right click on the adapter icon in adapters list window)
Next I was pretty angry, because using no firewall is not a choice for me but decided to give it a chance.
I've uninstalled firewall/antivirus, installed adapter's drivers and reinstalled firewall again.
Now everything works perfectly, except I had to reconfigure all the rules again.
My suggestion is also not to install any odd soft except for driver, which can be downloaded from the website and use only the driver, that corresponds to your OS.

UPDATE: Man, I take it back, the guy at Office Depot connected me to a print server/set up server connection that in wise will get me connected to the internet.  :'(

Not cool...

So at the moment, I let my eldest brother borrow my laptop for until this Monday coming up. And he reports that connecting to wireless internet isn't a problem. I think the problem for me is that either the connection is too low for me to reach, or, even if the connection signal is high, probably sometimes I won't get connection because of many different people are connecting on to the same lan, i.e, Cafe places or libraries, etc! Anyways, just some heads up. Thanks.  ;)

Exon, thanks for the reply, and wow, I'll see if I can do the same, reinstall, etc. Give me some time, since I'm busy and junk and I'll get back soon.  ;) Thanks for the heads up by the way.  :)

Not sure if you did this, but I had the same issues once I tried to modify some settings with Windows 7 64-bit...had to uninstall and reinstall the NIC to get it to connect back up stable.  Of course...still using Microsoft's Marvell driver due to the fact that D-Link still hasn't come out with a driver yet.
