I use the terrific “Second Copy” (SC) utility to backup files to the 321. I’ve used SC for years to backup files to network folders and external drives in the past and never seen this problem.

The problem is that instead of only copying files that have changed, SC copies ALL files, with each backup operation. Therefore, the backups take ages, and this is unnecessarily overtaxing the drives.
Any ideas why the utility fails to discern updated files from files that have not changed?

Is it because Windows can’t read the file attributes on the Linux based file system on the 321? And if that’s the problem, is there another utility that might actually work with the 321?

I use BeyondCompare (www.scootersoftware.com)with both the DNS-321 and DNS-323, and it syncs just fine under any conditions.

PS: RAID of any level is NOT a second copy.

Check the time/date settings on your DNS-321.  That might throw off SC's compare function.

My problem appears to be related somehow to the way the Unix file system is handled on the DLink 321.

The solution was to set the "Copy directly to destination file (do not copy to temporary file)" option for the profile.


The support people at Second Copy were fabulous! They doggedly worked with me until the problem was resolved. Not only is SC fully deserving of their awards for Best Overall Utility, but it seems their service is second to none.

I thought I'd also list other recommendations from SC support in case you might be interested:

a) On the Advanced properties dialog (from the "How" page) select "Copy directly to destination file (do not copy to temporary file)".  Now rerun the profile and see if you get any error messages in the Second Copy log.
 
b) Set the option described in (a) above, then delete the destination files that are being recopied and rerun the profile.
