DNS-323 direct connect to PC is slow on GigE - help
« on: March 02, 2010, 01:57:21 PM »

Here's the bottom line.  I get better than 20MB/s when transferring between to PCs through my DIR-655 router and DGS-2208 switch (both gigabit ethernet).  When retrieving files from the DNS-323 connected to the DIR-655 I get max 8MB/s, but avg of 6MB/s.  Taking the network out of the equation I connect the DNS-323 directly to one of my PCs.  The result is the same.  LAN setting is fixed at 1000 bps on both sides.  I've tried auto-detect on both sides as well.  The cable is Cat5E, but is the same cable that I am able to achieve high speeds PC-to-PC with.

I upgraded from 1.05 to 1.08 and transfer rates are essentially unchanged.  I also get the "pink lights" / denied access problem that I'll now have to dig into.

Help??

Not sure if this is coincidence - seems pretty fishy.  Within a 1/2 hour of upgrading firmware, my first drive (right) failed.  Less than 2 years old.  Still under warranty which is good, but I'm worried that something with this upgrade is mistreating my drives.

Grrrr!!

I can't imagine the firmware breaking the drive, that seems like a really remote possibility.

One thing that is true is that the internal temp (sensor on the board, not the drives) was around 15-17 F higher after the upgrade.  The fan was running at medium speed.

Did you reset to factory defaults after the firmware upgrade?  I had to do that to get my fan working properly again.

In the process of doing that.  Backed everything up, now going to reset everything and reformat.  The weird thing is that it told me that both drives were failing (at different times), which made me panic.  Then I hooked each one to an external reader and they were fine.  So there is something out-of-sync with the upgrade and starting from scratch is the way to proceed.  Luckily my laptop has a 500GB drive so I could back everything up on it.

Will follow up in the next day or so.  Taking a while - have a new baby in the house.

OK - reset to defaults.  The device still didn't recognize one of my drives, but did after I reformatted it outside of the DNS-323.  Now things are up and running wiht 1.08 and I haven't seen the pink lights again.  Transfer rates are now much more respectable.  I'm currently putting all my data back on the drives (in RAID1) again and xfer rate is 15MB/s sustained thru a gig switch and gig router.  I hope reads are closer to 20MB/s.  I will also see if Linux is still faster than Windows at reading from the 323 :-)

My new backup plan includes a Thermaltake BlacX drive dock connected to an always-on PC that uses rsync to make weekly backups of everything on the dns-323.

rhvonlehe,
Did you enable your MTU? If so what do you have it set as?

I'm seeing slightly greater than 20MB/s with a read with jumbo frames disabled.  I briefly turned it on and checked xfer rates with one large file and saw only 10-11MB/s.  Then I disabled it again and saw >20MB/s again.  I am not sure why the dropoff with jumbo frames since my router and switch should support them.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with 15MB/s write and 20MB/s read.
