Problems creating volumes and anonymous access
« on: March 05, 2010, 03:28:13 AM »

I've had this device for a week and I'm about to throw it out a window.

I have four matching 1.5TB Seagate drives. All of the drives have been preformatted both as FAT32 and also again within the machine as JBOD. Everything seems to format properly this way, though no volume is created. Once formatted, I tried to both manually create a auto-create RAID5 volumes. It gets stuck at "Initializing 100%". I let it run all night two nights now and it never changes this message.

I then tried to create a RAID0 volume, and then another RAID5 volume. Same problem. I pulled all four disks out and replaced with Western Digital 1TB Black disks. Again, formatted them as JBOD and they formatted but didn't create any volumes/shares. Once again, trying to make them into a RAID volume failed with the hanging initializing message.

I upgraded to 1.03 firmware on the first day and it didn't seem to help.

Any ideas on this volume creation issue?

In a related note, I tried and failed to make this thing work with ADS. It won't accept the upload for the ADS patch. When I select the file and choose to upload, it goes to a white screen and hangs there indefinitely. If I go back into the interface, the ADS module isn't listed as there. I hate the idea of user creation for a device I'll use only as a backup drive, so is there any way to turn on anonymous logins?

Thanks for you help guys!

Update: I pulled out all of the drives and replaced with four 160GB drives (different makes/models) and the RAID5 group built quickly and without problem.

Is there a known issue with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA drives and this unit? I know the support at D-Link said they'll work find with the newest firmware, which I believe I'm running:

Current NAS Firmware Version :      1.03
Current OLED Firmware Version :     1.03
Firmware Date :     08/14/2009

Should I try the 1.5TB drives again? or go to something else?

1.04 beta firmware fixed all of my problems.

ADS now installs and works.
The volume now creates in RAID0 or RAID5 without any problem using the 1.5TB drives.
I can connect to and write to the unit. Yay!

Thanks to Aaron Cambell from DLink support for the 1.04b01 update. It's great!
