Upgrading from D-Link 524 to D-Link 4500
« on: March 05, 2010, 08:02:01 AM »

I'm considering upgrading from our D-Links 524 router to the D-Link Xtreme DGL-4500.

The reason I want to upgrade is that there are four of us (myself, my two boys and our roommate) who each have our own computer, and our connection is lagging too much.

We have good Internet service, and the tower is only 1/2 block away.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using this router with four computers? What can we expect? Should all of us expect to have really fast connections? Both of my boys do online gaming.

Our present computers include: HP Pavillion Elite (Quad-core), Dell Dimension 800 (upgraded to 1GHz), HP Slimline, iBook G4, PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro, and soon I'll have my new Mac Pro 3.3 GHz (!!!).

I have several PCs and devices on all connected thru a switch or directly connected to the back the this router.
My ISP is Cable, into the 4500, from there I have my 24pt Gb switch with all the PCs, 2 printers and an additional WiFi connected. I have directly connected my 2 360s to the back the 4500. Been using this router for about 4-5 years now. Fully enjoy it. My roommate works from home so he uses it all day while I'm at work.

There has been some known issues with FW v1.21NA, some haven't seen this. Been working well. V1.15 seems to be the favorite version. v1.22NA which is current, resolves any issues that v1.21NA had and is very stable. WifI seems ok on 5Ghz, however 2.4Ghz is best for multiples of connecting devices.

I have 2 4500s, one with v1.15 and the 2nd with v1.22. Both are great. I game after work and enjoy the connections. I also recently upgrading my CAT 5 cabling to CAT 6 as of yesterday. SMOOOTH. Let us know what you think.

Do you still get free tech support from D-Links for the router?

To be honest I can't answer that question as I have not called them for any tech support as of yet. I usually handle my troubleshooting on my own or research any issues here in the forums or make contact with one of the 2 moderators that watch this forum. I've heard some good things about tech support and some not as good. I think it depends on the situation. I've been on here trying to help others with there 4500's and set up and connection issues. Theres been alot of success and some not either. Again depends on the situation. Look at my ATT DSL post on here about my buddys experience. Turned out it was not the 4500 routers fault, it was the ISPs fault. Theres alot of different things and lead people to think it's the 4500 that could be the cause and some are valid. However there are other things that could lead up to the 4500 not working well and thus I'm here when I can to help to try and figure them out if I can.

IMO, this router is a very good router and I'm very happy with it. There are others that would disagree and thats fine. For the most part, were on here to help each other and DLink improve the end user experiences with this router if possible. Any suggestions and comments are welcome. Let us know if this helps any or if you have any other questions or concerns.

I've had good experience with tech support from D-Links, but my present router (524) is no longer supported. I think it's time to get another router anyways. Looks like I'll probably give the 4500 a try ....

Does anyone use the 4500 or other similar routers with Clearwire?
