Firmware 1.33 ruined my signal strength.
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:54:06 PM »

I bought this router one month ago. With the router of the box, I had no problems with setup. It was at firmware 1.20. I placed the router on the first floor and received 60% signal strength in my basement and 80-95% on the second floor.

This weekend I felt the need to upgrade my router to the latest firmware. With the quick update to 1.33 I noticed that my router has lost a significant amount of signal strength. My PS3/XBOX and desktop are now receiving signals less than 30%. When I place my laptop 1 meter from my router, the signal strength only increases to 70% and above. I am reading these signal strengths from the router page status>wireless.

I have restored my settings, reset the router, and called d-link in hopes of fixing this problem. Unfortunately, none of these have helped. I wasted three hours on the phone with two customer service representatives who were clearly reading from a sheet of paper.

I am waiting for a call from a "level 3" tech support on Monday (they do not work on the weekends).

If you just purchased the DIR-655, please do not upgrade to 1.33NA. Save yourself the trouble. If you have any solutions please let me know, I will try anything.

Hi,

Go thru the items listed in the stickie for achieving 300 Mbps wireless speeds....

Its possible the new firmware enforces "goodNeighbor" policy more intensively then the 1.20 did....

Thanks for your reply.

I checked my d-link settings and followed the steps listed in the post. My signal strength is still very low. I am reading 20% signal strength whereas it used to be 40%. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi,

Vertical orientation seems to help my router work better.....make sure the antennae are positioned optimally....

make sure you base channel isn't being used by neighbors also....not to mention portable fones that use 2.4Ghz channels....  It doesn't take much to degrade wifi signals....

On a tangent, it is entirely possible that your signal strengths from the 1.20 FW were inflated to some extent..... I can't say for sure, but I know with my setup, the numbers on the PC side always vary from the numbers inside the router setups....  The numbers that really matter are what you get from sites like speedtest.net  and testmy.net (use the 50MB test for a better number)....

Also, dslreports.com has a tools section and their little utility called DR.TCP.EXE is handy for tweaking NIC settings that can impact download potentials, mostly with XP as vista and win7 have better control over those settings.

just some thoughts....

Thanks for your help Sammy.

My setup places my router on one side of the house with all wireless connection on the opposite side. These areas are my basement and second floor. Prior to 1.33 (1.20) I received a better connection from my basement wireless devices. Afterwards most of the wireless strengths hover a little over 40%.

I followed your suggestions and simply placing the router vertically increased the wireless settings by 5%, but it is not close to my original wireless strength. My xbox/ps3 are boasting a weak signal of 20%. These stats are checked on the status>wireless page and on the xbox and ps3 itself. Is there anything different that changed wireless projection settings in the 1.3X firmware.

(I apologize for my questions. I am very unfamiliar with routers)

Hi,

If anything, I would think the 1.33 should have improved wireless strengths..... At least that would be my goal if I was a coder....but who knows....

Is your transmit power set to high under the advanced wireless settings?
