Is it rated for impedance?

One of the more important ratings on any piece of wireless equipment is impedance, without getting into a long explanation suffice it to say that if this value does not match between your router and antenna then your signal will be drastically degraded.

Most wifi equipment (including the DIR-655 I believe) is rated for 50 Ohms of impedance, however some antennae (particularly of disreputable sources) are either not impedance rated and tuned or may be rated and tuned for a different impedance.

For more information as to why this is important please see the below wikis.

Please note:
Changing the antenna to a 3rd party may cause undesirable side effects (e.g. rebooting, poor wireless performance, etc)
We have a upgrade available for that unit ANT24-0230.

I've used it in my home and gained an extra floor of coverage.
Lycan - do You know where to buy ANT24-0230 in "the old world" ?
Itīs listed in the dlink.com site but not in the .dk or .co.uk sites !!

.nl makes it a Netherlands domain, so my guess here is that it would be Dutch, to my knowledge they don't have any special variations therein, according to the wiki that is the national language though they have some regional languages that look like they might be fun.

That said, am I reading this page wrong or are they wanting better than 100 Euro for all of their products?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!???!?!?!

Question for Fatman

i have a 3000 sq ft. home.  My Modem and DIR 655 are upstairs with the modem pointed out the window for better signal(clearwire)....

I have two computers--one desktop which is located downstairs past the kitchen and into an office on the other side of the home--this is my furthest away point.  I am using a DIR 552 beta SW and getting approx signal of 70-90%.  with Transfer Rate staying at or around 160  instead of 300 like what it is rated for.

My other is a laptop is downstairs in the living room that i just added a DIR 652 and it gets 100% signal with 300mbps.

My Question is I want to Add the D-link ANT24-0230  and run the antenne up through the ceiling and actually get it closer to the Router.  BUT the Cabling on the Antenne is only 3.8ft.  Is there anyway to change out the cabling to say 100ft?

Thanks for Any Replys.

It is possible that you could find 3 R-SMA extension cables of that length and install them, however cable losses beyond a meter of cabling become incredibly stifling.  And the cables will be acting as antennae themselves and won't be guaranteed to have the constructive interference expected by a proper antennae array.

it would be much better to find a way to move the router closer to the point you need.  Ethernet can be taken to 100m without degradation, and it's cheaper.

Thought about that --went up in the smaller portion of the attic to see if i could just run the cable over but that would be impossible  --the trusses from the flooring is in the way of even getting to it.

What about Power over Ethernet?

I am a bit confused at the mention of PoE, please elaborate.

The DIR-655 does not support PoE in any way so my guess is the answer is no.

PoE is moving AC current over Ethernet cable (CAT 5/6) however you may be in reference to Ethernet over Power which allows you to use the wiring in your home to transmit ethernet connection between a sending unit and a receiving unit. which would work very well as long as both the sending unit and the receiving unit are on the same curcit on the Fuse Breaker.

I think I have solved my problems--What i thought was impossible turned out not to be.  I had to create another access into the attic from the garage(which is where the office is next to.

I am able to get into  this portion of the attic and with an electrical fish line i bought at lowes i was able to create a path to go upstairs into the attic up there.  Then run the cable over to the bedroom and down through the ceiling and connected to my DIR 655 DIRECT CONNECT--YEA!!!!  I can take my DIR 552 back to Best Buy now.

one more Question...Since i am up here and doing this i might as well Run CAT 6 cable correct?  and Will the Cat 6 connector have the same RJ45 connection--i looked around and it appears to be the same connection.

and Finally ----Wait on Verizon to RUN FiOS in my town sometime in the near 100 years and I will be able to bump up my downloads to 50/10mbps.  HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Sounds like you got it all figured out... yes it is advised that you run CAT6 so that in the future when you upgrade your PC's adapter to GB connection you will not have to re run wire.
