DIR-655 Goes on Vacation Permanently
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:30:43 AM »

I finally did it. I took a hammer to my DIR-655 and enjoyed it.

I may have to do this as well.

Could you recommend a good replacement tho, one that has N capability and long range like the DIR-655 is supposed to have!  And one that doesn't screw around with silly securespot and doesn't throttle connections at a whim!

Please help!

I got a Linksys WRT310N and I am happy with it so far. I know a lot of people have problems with Linksys, but after my DLINK, I was ready to try anything. It installed easy and so far has been working very well and I haven't had any problems. Since this DLINK firmware fiasco, I am afraid to update my Linksys firmware. I hope this helps you.

Update: I got the WRT610N for $16 more ($124 delivered) as a refurb from Linksys and returned my WRT310N to BB for a $108 refund. I figured for $16 more I would rather have the Simultaneous Dual Band WRT610N with a connection for a USB drive as well. All seems to be working well as I have multiple desktops and laptops and an HP MediaSmart Server (Ex485) and all is working well. Speed is better than my smashed Dlink and my WRT610N already came with the latest firmware already installed and it was the version 2 router they sent me. I haven't had any signal problems at all and several of my wireless USB adaptors are Dual Band and so I can choose between connecting at 2.4GHz or 5GHz. I am thinking this is a win-win situation for me. Again, the WRT310N was working fine, I just figured for the small difference it was worth it to go with the WRT610N.

I switched to D-Link after having huge issues with my Linksys routers. I'm not sure I'm ready to go back to Linksys as it was just that bad (slow, low signal strength, horrid features, etc.)

Of course, D-Link isn't shaping up to be that much better, however, at least the signal strength is pretty good and the speed issues I was having earlier seem to have mostly gone away (only need to reboot once or twice a month instead of four or five times a day). I'll be keeping my eye out for new routers though.

As it stands I will not be buying any routers from Linksys (and, thus Cisco), D-Link or Belkin. Why is it that consumer routers all seem to be made from the same giant pile of shyte?

I know NetGear makes decent enterprise level stuff (though I did once have a switch that just died on me for no apparent reason), so I might go with them. But then again so did Cisco (not sure what their current reputation is), then they bought Linksys and both went to pot.

Nice to see some well balanced opinions too.
Maybe the level of expectation is a bit too high for wifi technology. Marketeers might pretend it's plug and play, boasting tremendous speed (and leaving out the word 'theoretical'). Anyone a bit educated will acknowledge that it's a very vulnerable and even limited technology for the average consumer.

I think Cradlepoint makes a good router. I will probably end up replacing my DIR-655 with the MBR1000. I have the CTR500 and it is great. These are cellular routers, but they work as standard routers too. I have had Linksys, Belkin, and now Dlink. I bought these because they were cheaper by price. I could of had something nice for all the money I spent. Live and learn.

I find it humorous that I was thinking about the same solution...  :D
